Lalah has a captivating voice with deep undertones. I have had this CD on heavy rotation for the last month. It's about love spirituality and self awakenings. It's fantastic music at it's best. Thanks Lalah for this warm and insightful CD.

If you have become a Lalah Hathaway fan in the last five years, this album is her first album; where all the recent good music started from. I bought this album because there were some songs I just had to have of hers to complete a compilation CD that I made of her music. There is some very good music on it that showcases her as she begun her singing career. So, if you like her two most recent albums and you want some oldies that are like those, buy this!

Lalah Hathaway's meaty contralto is naturally flavored with the ingredients of great soul: mournful resolve and personal conviction served with a healthy side of evangelical zest. On "Outrun the Sky" - her first solo recording since 1994 - she sets her best china for the feast: sample her delicious rendition of the Luther Vandross classic "For Ever, For Always, For Love" and you're left feeling like a stuffed turkey. There's an abundant menu of simmering funk ("In The End") and beautifully roasted treats ("Admit It", "We Were Two"). Hathaway serves up warm and joyful music that should appease many musical appetites.

In disbelief, I read Rickey Wright's review as I returned to buy yet another 'The Song Lives On' CD for yet another devotee. More than eight years later, this Joe Sample and Lalah Hathaway masterpiece still receives universal praise on jazz websites and various blog entries by people who know good music. Sometimes it makes one wonder a) how someone could acquire a job based upon having a good ear for music, yet refer to Joe Sample's piano playing as "monotony" and Lalah's singing as "boring." b) If, eight years later,he could actually stand by and believe that his scathing review is still accurate and that the thousands of other positive reviews are wrong.
