This reviewer has spent much ink in this space over the past year or so touting various old time country blues singers like Bukka White, Skip James and, of course, Son House. I have noted that their music reflected the rural southern, mainly Mississippi Delta. plantation life of hard toil (picking that damn cotton), hard living and hard loving from an earlier part of the last century. That age effectively ended on an economic level with the vast increases in the mechanization of agriculture and the migration of blacks north (mainly to Chicago and other Midwest industrial stops) in the period leading up to World War II. Musically it ended with the electrification of the blues guitar as the music headed north. That, however, begs an important question. Who would, if anyone, continue that old ... Read More

Keb is a talented musician with a beautiful voice and solid poetic compositional skills. Very much appreciated that he participated in the Vote For Change tour in '04, and thought that he, Bonnie and Jackson Browne were one hell of a trio.

Several years ago I went to a Bonnie Raitt concert (had great seats) and the pre-show performer was Keb Mo. I had never heard him or his music, but I had met Bonnie back in the early 70's and was so looking forward to seeing her and listening to her set. When Keb Mo came on stage...a stool and an acustic guitar, I had no idea what I was in for! Unbelievable guitarist and that voice...WOW! I didn't want it to end. I have since purchased most of his CDs and go see every performance I can! He is the best folk type blues musician in today's world. This CD is one of his best, everything from humor to spiritual to just good 'ole "sitting of the front porch" blues. Highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys music without all the "technology" that often gets in the way of the musician the songs. ... Read More

Keb' Mo' came on the scene as a breath of fresh air for the blues. But, as his albums and output progress, it appears that he has elected to adopt a smooth, polished style that will turn-off many blues purists, who prefer the grit and pain of traditional blues. So, if you and yours are fans of Kenny G, Grover Washington Junior, Boney James, etc., then this stuff is for you. Oversimplified, safe, and at times quite boring. There are a handful of semi-precious gems on this album, including "I Was Wrong," "Henry," and "Rainmaker;" and the HDCD encoding allows for exception sound quality. Overall this is a nice, safe, happy, blues disc that lacks a certain something. But, if you need a present for Xmas, your mother would love to put this in rotation for her next Bookclub meeting.

Like many of the negative reviewers here, I, too, was surprised at this CD. I was expecting the same folksy blues as his other albums.

But this CD is wonderful in its own way. This is happy family music, which goes back to the roots of folk music. It's stuff with a strong values, a good message, that's easy to sing along (whether with children, or maybe you just need a smile).

I had to post this review in defense of this CD. No, it's not my favorite Keb Mo. But when I need a smile, I pop in this CD. This is not impressive music from a technical/artistic perspective - his wife and kids sing (and even his grandmother, I think). But this is such a gem - it's charming in its own way.

Sure, I wish I'd known in advance what to expect ... but now that I have the CD, I'm ... Read More

This is an outstanding recording of a live Boston concert featuring some of music's most notable stars who've generously donated the proceeds of this CD to the homeless. We've got the Usual Suspects, folks like Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger (Hobo's Lullaby) to notable bluesman Keb Mo (Baby, Don't Let me Go Homeless), jazz singer Madeline Peyroux (I Think It's Going to Rain Today), and African womens ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock (Stranger Blues).

"Give US Your Poor" is a generational collection which will have something to appeal to just about everyone in the family. The engineering is above par for a live collection--you don't get a lot of audience feedback which can just sound like static after a while. The cause is definitely worthy. This various artists collection is an overlooked ... Read More

I must admit I had always thought Keb Mo was a little generic as a blues artist until I came across this CD in Scorcese box set. Put it in the CD player just to get a little better idea about where Keb is coming from and man was I surprised. This is really good. His cover of Robert Johnson's "Come In My Kitchen" is probably the best cover of this song I have ever heard. "Henry" is probably my favorite, just a nice smooth relaxing song. This is a good CD to listen to on summer night, it just sounds like summer to me. All in all I'm glad I gave this CD a chance because now I see Keb is a really great modern blues artist and there aren't many of those around now.
