Maybe these don't represent absolutely the greatest duets in all opera. But they represent some awfully good ones! The CD begins with a duet from "Les Pecheurs des Perles" (Puccini) and ends with the gloomy Miserere (from "Il Trovatore," by Verdi). In between are many more operas, from Donizetti and Mozart to Strauss and Wagner. Some of the finer singers of the past half century appear in various of these duets.

A bit more detail on a handful of these to illustrate.

"Sull'aria" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro." Heather Harper and Judith Blegen sing the parts here. This is a sweet duet from the opera. The singer's voices meld well together and this represents a poignantly sung piece.

"Ah! Verrana a tell sull'aure," from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." ... Read More

Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.

We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!

It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

I bought this recording for the Faure not knowing much more about Durufle than his "Four Motets on Gregorian Themes". What a shock! Never have I heard a more original piece of music than his "Requiem" which is ironic because he bases most of the themes on gregorian chants. The listener can easily tell that Shaw knew exactly what he wanted from his chorus and the orchestra because they follow every little nuance perfectly! The chemistry between musicians and conductor is so apparent, and the french textures and harmonies really wrap the listener in a warm blanket of music. I have heard this recording, another recording of the version with just organ and choir, and I plan to buy the Voices of Ascension version for chamber orchestra. Now, as to Shaw's non-use of soloists: I did some research recently ... Read More

It may be dated - but this recording of Orff's major opus is still by far the most vibrant and scintillating available. Long may it be remain so ...

A wonderful album. I have several copies of Handel's Messiah, but the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by Robert Shaw's singers is exceptional, outstanding. I was inspired to have my young son listen to this album: Verdi's "Dies Irae", Orff's "O Fortuna", and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus".

Notice that there are 3 versions of "Dies Irae" on this album. It's nice to hear others. I am not normally a fan of Requiems. I will say that I do like Bach's Mass in B Minor and the Kyrie Eleison excerpted here is beautiful.

Camina Barana

Resurrected by Karl Orff, from the caves of a Monastery in Germany, the manuscripts of a large collection of Georgian Chants were put together, re-scored into the beautiful suite represented here.

Under Eugene Normandy, there is nothing quite like it in all of music. It is music directly from the Middle Ages that touches the soul in deep unexpected ways and in unexpected areas. Although Camina Barana is in the same class as Handel's Messiah, in my estimation it is better, richer; oddly even more modern: The mixture of choral and symphonic counterpoint and musical motifs is always not just interesting but hauntingly surprising. But more than this, the music has an urgency about it that is post-Modern, relentless, taunting, agitating and compelling. It grabs the aesthetic ... Read More

Frederica Von Stade is at present my favorite mezzo-soprano out there. This disc gives a wonderful example of her vocal powers and style. If you are a moderate opera/lieder-listener, this cd has many tracks which are pleasant and accessible, however an aficienado would find much to be delighted with as well.

Over twenty years ago, before returning to the US from two years in Norway, I bought the LP recording of this performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto. It immediately became a favorite, a summation for me of the beauty and wonder of the land and people. Since then, I have wondered if there were better recordings available. After all, this was a recording with no well known names and little hype. I can say, now, after twenty years of listening and looking, it is still the best.

This is yet another recording that I am finally getting around to hearing on the occasion of Pierre Boulez's 80th birthday year, a superb entry in Sony's PIERRE BOULEZ series, with Boulez leading the New York Philharmonic. The most surprising aspect to me is finding that the "Lulu Suite" is mainly instrumental! Only one movement of five features Judith Blegen's soprano, the "Song of Lulu." So the main vocal feature on the disc is Jessye Norman's soprano on "The Wine," which sets to music verses of Baudelaire from "Les Fleurs du mal."

All three works use the 12-tone system created by Schoenberg. Berg is widely seen as the most listener-friendly of the Second Vienna School, and this music, while not as accessible as Mahler, has dramatic contours and lush orchestration that confirm that reputation. ... Read More

What a joy to find this recording! It was originally broadcast live from the San Francisco Opera in 1973. The cast is Joan Sutherland (Rosalinde), Nolan Van Way (Eisenstein), Judith Blegen (Adele), Ragnar Ulfung (Alfred), Huguette Tourangeau (Orlofsky), Bruce Yarnell (Falke), Daniel Sullivan (Dr. Blind), Spiro Malas (Frank), and Walter Slezak (Frosch). Richard Bonynge conducts.

Musically, this performance just can't be beat. Sutherland sings with beauty, intelligence, and a sure flair for comedy. Judith Blegen sings Adele's two arias with an ease that eludes most Adeles. Her coloratura in the Laughing Song sounds more like laughter than usual, without any loss of tonal beauty. Bonynge supports the singers with tempi that bring out their best. Listen to the end of the first act, when the tempo slows ... Read More
