I saw a PBS special on Strauss and ran out to purchase. I'm not sure if I was caught up in the PBS hype or just had different expectations.

I was first introduced to this Mantovani album as a child. It held a prized place in my father's record collection and although the remastering process made it louder, clearly there were limits with regard to sonic quality.

It is still my go-to recording for THE BLUE DANUBE et al. Strongly recommended!

Willi Boskovsky was born and trained in Vienna. Both Boskovsky and the great Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra -- of which he served as as concertmaster for forty years -- thoroughly assimilated the essence of the delightful Viennese waltzes and other music presented on these CDs. This is beautiful music superbly conducted and played by people who understand and love it. All of the favorites and many delightful lesser-known works by the Waltz King Johann Strauss II, his father Johann Strauss I, and his brothers Josef and Eduard are included in this set of six CDs. Very highly recommended.

Lucia Popp came from my home country of Slovakia. In 1963, she took her chance and, as the amazingly talented 24-year-old ingenue, accepted the offer to sing in Vienna. She crossed the iron curtain. This for a long time made her and undesirable element in the Communist Czechoslovakia. Only after the collapse of Soviet block in 1989 she gained the due recognition also in her homeland. Tragically, just four years later she died of cancer, aged only 54...
What she left is the great body of work. She specialized on German and Austrian composers, which is evident also from this great compilation. However, anything she touched, she turned into gold.
On this double CD you can find many of her glorious recordings. Especially high recommended are all Mozart's (among them the famous Queen aria from ... Read More

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed ... Read More

It's been 15 years since Carlos Kleiber led this New Year's concert, and as you'd expect from a great conductor, he applies his unique stamp. Not a single bar sounds routine; orchestral textures are precise and perfectly balanced; a sense of aliveness prevails throughout. The only listeners who might be disappointed are traditionalists, because Kleiber isn't a gemutlich conductor -- this is the most serious Strauss recording I own in its tone. The program is full of familiar items more than rarities (in part because Sony doesn't give us the whole program, which can be had, I believe, only on the DVD). I'm grateful that Kleiber chose two substantial overtures, Nicolai's Merry Wives of Windsor and Johann Strauss's Gypsy Baron. Both are performed superbly, if slightly subdued in manner. But that adjective applies ... Read More

Reiner's approach to the Strauss Viennese style is somewhat inconsistent. For example he takes the Emperor Waltzes in "straight" 3/4 time and is thus devoid of the traditional delayed third beat slightly throwing off the snare drum and mars a tradition that gives the Viennese waltz its uniqueness and charm. He also makes in my judgement a serious error in cutting part of the finale coda...a move which knocks out the necessary tension leading to the grand rise of orchestral forces culminating in the final tympani roll. Other tracks do include some very nice idiosyncratic "lite" touches and are delightful. His use of rubato could be a bit more liberally applied. Reiner's tempos are lively and the orchestra responds with polish. The SACD has a fine sound presence in comparison to the analogue CD version.

i can't believe this set is selling for $80 here. i bought this set years ago at circuit city for $35. last time i visited, there was still one on the shelf. *shrug* i would definitely try and find it cheaper, but even at this price you're not getting ripped off completely. all of the recordings are of good quality and the selections are actually pretty damn good compared to other "best of" sets.
