I remember back in the early 80's going through the (Cut-out)section of (albums)at my local music store,if any of you are old enough to remember those.I came upon and purchased the LP Slug Line.It was my first John Hiatt record.I now have some 14 of his albums and each one is better than the other. His musical skills and experimentation continue to awe me and his writting just blows me away. The lines he comes up with are just so real and true,I ecspecially like the one about "a few less brain cells and a lot less hair".
John Hiatt is like a fine wine,he just gets better with age.

Hiatt never sounded more gut-wrenchingly 'authentic' than on this very touching work. I recall a small documentary on his that came out at about to coincide with its launch, and if the recall is accurate, I think it was none less than John Lee Hooker who confides that when he first heard Hiatt on record, he and friends thought it was a black guy. That's some testimony to the conviction Hiatt brings to his rootsy-styles singing and playing.'Have a Little Faith in Me' has recently been re-recorded by someone who is getting current airplay, a disembowelling of it's originator's intention. It is from this point of the collection of 'Family ' songs that the big end of his muse lights up; a wonderful record for all time.

Coming from Scotland , I'd never heard of John Hiatt before and discovered him by accident . I heard "Have a Little Faith in me" and was stunned and ordered his "Best of" and it's fantastic ! Now I had to find out that he wrote "Thing Called Love" and "Angel Eyes" and he sings them better than the well-known versions and his music is just great.
This guy rocks !

Until recently, I was aware only that John Hiatt is a song writer who crafted songs covered by others. Last month I saw him in solo performance and the next day I purchased this anthology. This collection is jaw-dropping in scope - from early Nashville days, to much more contemporary writing and performing. This is a great beginning point; in fact, I've already added "The Tiki Bar Is Open" and "Master of Disaster" to my collection. I appreciate wry wit in songwriting, from Richard Thompson to Albert Collins, and John Hiatt ranks right up there. This investment investment pays great dividends.

I've got several Hiatt CD's, all good. I just had to buy more work of his after hearing "Blue Telescope" from this CD. Beautiful lyrics, great production.

John Hiatt's 1988 release "Slow Turning" is a hands down classic. This was my introduction to John Hiatt after I heard the uptempo rocker "Paper Thin" on the local radio station. I soon discovered that this CD was one solid set of songs that were easy to listen to all the way thru. I just happen to listen to this great album the other day on my iPod while driving back from a worksite with a group of co-workers. It had been awhile since I listened to this classic, and towards the end I remembered just how good it is.

The album kicks off with a few up-beat songs featuring great acoustic and electric guitars. John's backing band is very tight, with good production. "Icy Blue Heart" slows things down to a crawl, but what a great country-tinged ballad it is, telling the story of a couple who meet ... Read More

I'm a big Hiatt fan, ever since I first saw him years ago on Austin City Limits, but I don't yet have all his albums. I own and I'm familiar with maybe a ten of them; he's been around for years now, has tons of records out there.

I am convinced he is incapable of doing a bad recording. Some musicians focus on lyrics, some on melody, some on technical expertise, some on singing, some on making lots of money (or at least enough money to not have to work 9 to 5!); it's tough for one person to attain decent results in all of those categories. I would say Hiatt has reached excellence in most of those.

He's one of our greatest songwriters, a lyricist of phenomenal ability, capable of making you laugh and making you cry. Other performers are always recording his stuff, which is a pretty good ... Read More
