Randy Crawford came my way by the unforgetable song "Street Life" when she performed on the album Street Life. I have listened to her releases off and on since and feel this is a special release. She appears to be in top form, united with original Crusader band member Joe Sample on keyboards for a mellow and at times dramatic presentation. There are echoes of the voice on "Street Life", like on "End of the Line " where her voice trails off and flows much like it did on that memorable song. The title track is a classic, that begins with a bouncy nu-bossa-nova-beat to introduce Randy's magnificently soulful pipes. Another song for which Randy is known is "Rio de Janeiro Blue." She performs it here , an updated version with more improvisation but I prefer the more melancholy vesrion that can ... Read More

As a long-time fan of Joe Sample and one who has seen him many times in concert, I have no idea how Old Places, Old Faces escaped my notice when it was first released. I never saw it in a music store and I never saw it here on amazon until it recently popped up in my recommendations. After reading the uniformly positive reviews, I had to have it.
Old Places, Old Faces is one of those rare albums that has no filler. Every piece is worthy. Nevertheless, I have my favorites. Those are the mellow and dreamy Free Yourself; the methodical, mesmerizing Black and White; the ever-so-cool Clifton's Gold; the suave title cut; Hippies On A Corner, a punchy tune that oozes with Sample's trademark style; and the relaxing piece that closes the album, Angels on My Mind.
If you are a Joe Sample fan on any ... Read More

Music : The Song Lives On

In disbelief, I read Rickey Wright's review as I returned to buy yet another 'The Song Lives On' CD for yet another devotee. More than eight years later, this Joe Sample and Lalah Hathaway masterpiece still receives universal praise on jazz websites and various blog entries by people who know good music.
Sometimes it makes one wonder a) how someone could acquire a job based upon having a good ear for music, yet refer to Joe Sample's piano playing as "monotony" and Lalah's singing as "boring."
b) If, eight years later,he could actually stand by and believe that his scathing review is still accurate and that the thousands of other positive reviews are wrong.
Perhaps he was bored that it wasn't Janet Jackson, who I'm sure he would refer to as a masterful vocalist extraordinaire. ... Read More

If you are looking for music with electronics that's not too hard grooving but not too soft and quiet, this is the CD for you. Joe Sample does it again. Here, Joe (piano/synths) is backed by: Michael Landau, St. Paul (guitar); Rickey Peterson (synths/programming); Jason Miles (programming); Jerry Hey (trumpet/flugel); Larry Williams (sax/flute); Marcus Miller (bass); Lenny Castro (percussion); and Omar Hakim (drums).
If you like this, check out Joe's CD "Spellbound" with some of the same musicians.

I took a risk getting this album as I had never heard of Joe Sample before but I knew that I would be getting good sound quality from a GRP recording and boy was I pleasantly surprised! This album comes from a digital master and hasn't been remastered but sounds a lot better than many of the so-called remastered cds that are out there. Also, I've discovered just how good Joe's playing is and this is one of my favourite smooth jazz albums in my collection. Highly recommended and I'm glad I stumbled across this gem!
