The first time that I heard Los Romeros and in particular Pepe Romero many years ago, was the "Concierto de Aranjuez" and the "Fantasía para un Gentilhombre" of Joaquin Rodrigo, with Neville Mariner and the "Saint Martin in the fields" Orchestra, after listening those magisterial pieces for guitar, I said to my self "What a guitarist", pure notes and a brilliant interpretation (in my opinion better than Narciso Yepes, and even than John Williams ) and now in this recording and some others more of Pepe that I listened, I confirm my appreciation of this brilliant Spanish artist.

This recording presents the most representative Spanish composers of the nineteenth century with the exception of Celedonio Romero (1913-1996) father of Pepe. As a classical guitarist I can ... Read More

Most people who like hearing classical guitar, but who do not play or are rank amateurs, prefer a classical guitar album where the guitar sounds like it could be playing in the room. Technology since the 60's has made that possible for the classical guitar.

However, while this album is a treat to serious classical guitarists because it hallmarks the early days of the legend Segovia, the sound quality, although amaziningly clean sounding, won't satisy the average person.

That being said, the obvious highlight of the album is the fact that it represents how Segovia interpreted the popular guitar pieces back in his early days, before age and experience taught him to prioritize feeling and soul above playing everything at 100 miles per hour.

I don't agree with Leslie Gerber's editorial review of this disc, Segovia's playing of Bach is beautiful and he infuses this music which is so easy to play in a sterile fashion with great attention to the melodic line, contrapuntal texture and form, skills which are often sadly lacking in todays performances of Bach. Leslie Gerber blindly follows the politically correct mood of the day which is to deny that there is any romance in this music, truly great performers don't just play the dots they bring something special of their own to the music, a point completely missed by Leslie Gerber and other critics and commentators of her kind.

Is there anyone who doesn't like Spanish piano music of the last century? No, I thought not. There is something so fresh and smile-inducing about the piano works of Albéniz and Granádos and their brethren. And of Spain's composers none are more deeply cultured and abundantly talented than those from Catalonia. Catalan pianist Jordi Masó, who has already given us treasurable recordings devoted to music by Mompou, Turina, Soler, Homs and others, is back with a cross-section of piano miniatures from that northeastern corner of Spain centered on the great city of Barcelona. Little of the music here is familiar to the casual music-lover outside Spain but all of it is worth hearing. The composers on this disc include Federico Mompou, Ricardo Viñes, Xavier Montsalvatge, Enrique Granados, Josip María ... Read More

Music : Five Centuries of Spanish Guitar Music

The main feature that distinguishes this outstanding guitarrist is that sheer lyricism and overwhelming musicality, the way he conveys the listener into the particular univwerse of every work he plays.

It's useless to state the whole virtuosism, astonishing vitality and warm tune of this notable interpreter. Five centuries of the guitar demonstrate by far the kaleidoscopic flight and the enormous talent of this national pride, master of masters.

Don't miss this record.

I should make clear at the outset that I don't own this (double) album. However, over the years I have accumulated all the recordings in previous manifestations. Since Amazon does not (as I write) list the contents, I give it below. By my computation, the total time is well over two hours.

1) Recuerdos de la Alhambra [Tárrega]
2-4) Studies No. 7, 8 & 12 [Villa-Lobos]
5) Serenata andaluza [Malats]
6) Fandanguillo, Op. 36 [Turina]
7) Segovia, Op. 29 [Roussel]
8) Bagatelles (5) [Walton]
9) Homenaje "pour Le tombeau de Claude Debussy" [Falla]
10) The Miller's Dance [Falla]
11) Invocación y danza [Rodrigo]
12-18) Courtly Dances from Gloriana, Op. 53 [Britten]
19) Gallardas [Sanz]
20) Canarios [Sanz]
21) Villano [Guerau] ... Read More

Don't buy this for the recipes. The CD comes with 2 simple recipes printed in the cover and you could easily obtain these yourself from an internet search. The music, however, is exquisite.
