If this CD has made this fantastic quartet known to a larger number of people, then, it's fine. But what a desappointment in terms of music ! A few interresting songs, but i can't feel any great inspiration in this commercial CD poorly surfing on the ethnic wave. A shame.

I have been a fan of Kronos Quartet since the early 90s. Pieces of Africa, Night Prayers, and Henryk Górecki: Already It Is Dusk (String Quartet No. 1, Op. 62)/ Quasi una Fantasia (String Quartet No. 2, Op. 64) are among my favorite. But Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass, is the most rejoicing, ironically festive and beautifully composed cd by them.

I purchased Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass when it was first released back in February 1995. Up here in Vermont, early February still means the dead of winter. I recall listening to Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass incessantly during that winter season, particularly on my long drives between school, work and home. I certainly still attribute this cd to sunny, but cold winter days, meandering through nameless roads. In fact, ... Read More

I haven't written a review for a product in an extremely long time here, but I felt that I needed to say something on this album.

I was looking for pieces of George Crumb to listen to and stumbled upon "Black Angels." I did not expect to hear what I did. First of all, I must say that the quartet is extremely talented in all matters; their renditions of the work of Crumb and Shostakovich are supremely beautiful (my favorites: "Allegro Molto" and "Allegretto" by Shostakovich.) The pieces from Crumb--"Black Angels: Thirteen Images from the Dark Land"--could not be more appropiately titled. It is at times gorgeous and yet terrifying, shocking and yet absorbing--but always haunting. (By the way, in case you did not know, Crumb's "Therenody I: Night of the Electric Insects", the first of all pieces ... Read More

... recurring ... disorientating ... expanded loops and interludes ... anti-minimalist ... arch-modernist ... parastatic piano arpeggio apparitions ... elusive supraliminal strings ... uneasy pastoral ... zombie amniotic ...

hyper-expressionist absurdist ambient post-buddhist furniture music.

A spiral galaxy of stars to Aki Takahashi & the Kronos Quartet for recording this bizarre, surreal piece.

John Adams becomes more popular by the year with his compositions for large orchestra ('Naive and Sentimental Music', 'On the Transmigration of Souls') and operas ('Doctor Atomic' and in a way 'El Nino') gaining justly increased performances, but Adams has another side - chamber works. As with all great composers it is the smaller, exposed works that often tell us more about a composer's genius. The two works on this splendid recording prove this to be the case.

'John's Book of Alleged Dances' was written for the Kronos Quartet and is a bit of whimsy in its series of eleven dances for string quartet and a rhythm track made of prepared piano sounds. The result is a group of works that pay homage to the backwoods simplicity of America's folktunes. The dances are endlessly creative, with never a moment of ... Read More

The issue I have with some of the new music of our time is that listeners are often drawn in by some musical program rather than by the music itself. When the program is one with which listeners feel some deep personal connection, such listeners then project their personal feelings and experiences onto the given music. This creates a sense of depth and connection to that music which may not actually be present. When confronted with programmatic music, I prefer to listen first, without direction, influence or the reading of liner notes, so that the music will either communicate something to me (or not). When listeners rely on whatever gloss a composer has imposed on his/her music, they may be lulled into a false belief that the music itself is profound. That is my problem here with Professor Golijov's work.

This is a truly fascinating CD. Perhaps it doesn't have the greatest balance in terms of pieces, but that certainly shouldn't put you off at all.

The opening piece (the title track if you want to be "pop") is a truly sublime Lisztian work - you'll find none of the fire and virtuosity that you may have come to expect from him. Seems rather ironic, that a piece written by one of the most "aggressive" composers for another one of the most "aggressive" composers is really quite sublime - no Wagner tubas either.

However, that piece provides about 1/15 of the music presented on this album. The other two pieces, by Berg and Webern respectively, are very good ways to "get into" these two composers. We like to associated them with dry, cold, inaccessible serialism, an exceptionally unfair label on both the composers ... Read More

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
