I heard this CD on a PBS pledge drive (it was a premium) and found myself loving every cut on it! I was in my car and just wanted to keep on driving and listening. This is by far my most-played CD - I've had to make it a weekend only listen to prevent getting burned out on it. HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you are unfamiliar with some of the pieces, you will quickly learn to love them. . . . I must end this review - I'm off to listen to the "flower duet" for the 100th time. . .

I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a steal with a list price under four dollars, and the former was a truly good compilation of many uplifting, diverse, impactful, and pleasant pieces. I am satisfied with my purchases and have filled the gap in my music collection. I can't see Opera getting better than this and the other title I mentioned. Enjoy!

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

First of all, History:

Carmen is not a grand opera. The belief in the opposite is one of the most artistically catastrophic malapropisms in the history of Western music. Georges Bizet, the greatest French composer of his day (in the world of Charles Gounod and Jacques Offenbach), is remembered today as a tiger of a conductor, an unbending an inflexible stalwart of musical realism, anti-establishment, and verismo (that red-blooded dramatic art perfected in part by Puccini and Mascagni). He composed Carmen in the tradition of the opéra-comique, an operatic sphere dating back to Mozartian comedy a la Le Nozze di Figaro, with musical sections accompanied by spoken recitatives or dialogues.

The Homeric tale of opera's creation, premiere, and juvenile existence is ... Read More

This is just the third opera I've owned and I LOVE it. Seriously, it is beautiful. I listen to it at the YMCA while walking on the treadmill - and the time flies by. I even manage to follow the libretto during slower moments. Even if you're a newbie like me, buy this opera.

And that is Caballe five years later at her La Scala debut! I'm not complaining, I loved this Carnegie Hall performance and I'm sure it brings back sweet memories to people who attended it but I find Caballe sounds a bit too girlish. She is stunning but I felt this Lucrezia needs to mature a bit and that she did. This is already evident in her studio recording just a year later where she is the perfect, patrician Lucrezia. On the other hand I really liked the urgency and spontaneity of this evening. I can also hear a slight anxiety and she even takes an additional breath in "m'odi ah m'odi", which is rather unusual for her but it's all because she's transforming from a talented young soprano into a legend. She doesn't show off her top notes as she did at La Scala but is nevertheless exciting. ... Read More

I just bought my second copy of this excellent CD because I literally wore the first one out. No matter how I feel before I play this music, I feel joy whenever I listen to it. Highly recommended to beginners and the more experienced opera listeners as well.

I'm having a real difficulty in formulating an objective opinion about this recording. This is mainly due to the fact that I dislike the opera.

"Lakme" is French exoticism dating from the 1880s. Its obvious model is Bizet's "Les Pecheurs de perles," French exoticism from a generation earlier. The emulation includes dramatic structure. Both operas have a big duet toward the front, the Flower Duet in "Lakme" and "Au fond du temple saint," the big tenor-baritone duet in "The Pearl Fishers." After a longish interval, both have a flashy, showpiece aria, the Bell Song for Lakmé, Delibes' soprano, and "Je crois entendre encore" for Nadir, Bizet's tenor. In both operas, these are the only parts that are widely known.

As a music drama, a complete work of art, "The Pearl Fishers" is successful. ... Read More

She wasn't called La Stupenda by the Italians for nothing. Now retired, a truly great voice. I don't think I shall hear anything like her again. Worth every penny. Magnificent recording.
