I bought this recording for the Faure not knowing much more about Durufle than his "Four Motets on Gregorian Themes". What a shock! Never have I heard a more original piece of music than his "Requiem" which is ironic because he bases most of the themes on gregorian chants. The listener can easily tell that Shaw knew exactly what he wanted from his chorus and the orchestra because they follow every little nuance perfectly! The chemistry between musicians and conductor is so apparent, and the french textures and harmonies really wrap the listener in a warm blanket of music. I have heard this recording, another recording of the version with just organ and choir, and I plan to buy the Voices of Ascension version for chamber orchestra. Now, as to Shaw's non-use of soloists: I did some research ... Read More

THE SHOW:
In my opinion, Les Misérables is the best musical ever written. It is surprisingly faithful to its source, the excellent epic novel by Victor Hugo. True, many plot episodes have been dropped and some characters have been combined, but the only major change is that the character of Eponine has been ennobled. The main storyline is about Jean Valjean, a man embittered by an overzealous prison system but redeemed by the kindness of a bishop. He vows to live the remainder of his life as an upright man, which leads him to be a successful businessman and mayor, the guardian of an orphan, and eventually a fighter in the doomed Paris revolt of 1832. However, there are a multitude of characters who interact with Valjean and each other. The plot is complex, and the show runs about 3 hours, ... Read More

A wonderful album. I have several copies of Handel's Messiah, but the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by Robert Shaw's singers is exceptional, outstanding. I was inspired to have my young son listen to this album: Verdi's "Dies Irae", Orff's "O Fortuna", and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus".

Notice that there are 3 versions of "Dies Irae" on this album. It's nice to hear others. I am not normally a fan of Requiems. I will say that I do like Bach's Mass in B Minor and the Kyrie Eleison excerpted here is beautiful.

I was excited to see such a great collection of classics, but I was really disappointed to listen and discover that many tracks are shortened dramatically. A fraction of Rhapsody in Blue- a ridiculously short fragment of Bethoveen Ninth Symphony- "Ode to Joy" a tiny part of the first movement of Rachmoninov's Piano Concerto no.3.

I'd rather have fewer tracks and the complete movements.

These CD's are are constant companions that I listen to on my way to work in the morning...Nic Raine and his orchestra do a superb job rendering the themes, but some of the vocals, especially the one for Rawhide, make me yearn for the originals. All in all, it's a great set, definetely worth the money for a 40-50something baby boomer.

As mentioned this is a great collection for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the classical genre. I purchased this collection for the sheer amount of Mozart available, but I would say there is one flaw.

It mentions the Film Name on the track, instead of the Original name of the compositions. Although I can understand this is the connection between the CD and customer, however I would have also liked the real composition names, so next time I'm drunk on wine with friends I can drop the M-Bomb (Mozart).

Despite that I'm still giving it 5 stars, as the product more than makes up for it!

In a watershed moment for Columbia Records, this original Broadway cast recording began the rapid climb of the company into the stratosphere of pop culture consciousness.

Produced by company president Goddard Lieberson, it sold five million copies and spent a staggering 480 weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart. To place the album in an accurate historical perspective, it was the Thriller of its generation.

It is timeless music - due to the rich arrangements & performances - with the numbers encapsulating the musical for those who only have the album as the point of reference.

There are few albums that truly define the American music industry. This is certainly one which has space on that lofty mantel.

I agree with the other reviewers; Mozart's magic comes through in these skillful adaptations. It's a pleasure to hear them over and over again. Highly recommended as a great "easy listening" CD.
