Buckner and Jacquet have stirred and served up a gumbo of soul-laden jazz, swing and pop. Hot, steamy Hammond organ with smooth, sexy, sassy sax and backup. A heady stew that takes you back in time when back-alley clubs served down-home, cookin', jammin' music. A real joy ride this album.

I'm quite partial to the sound of the Texas tenors and this disc lives up to my every expectation. Illinois Jacquet has always been one of my favorites when it comes to deep toned tenor and on "The Blues, That's Me!" Illinois serves up heap's of it! To make matters even tastier, the inclusion of legendary four string guitarist Tiny Grimes add's that one extra ingredient which makes this platter a pleasing and worthy addition to any jazz/blues collection. This session is filled with soulful swinging blues, hence the c.d.'s title and opening track. Along the way we're treated to a wonderful brooding rendition of "'Round Midnight" where Illinois lies down his tenor in favor of bassoon, adding even more temperment to Monk's moody classic. Pianist Wynton Kelly along with the rhythm section of Buster ... Read More

My father got me listening to Illinois Jacquet when I was 6 years old when he brought home the JATP 1947 Perdido/Mordido recordings. I've been a fan ever since. Of course, these studio sessions from 1950s are not as "noisy" as the 1940s JATP recordings that feature "The King".

I gave this album 5 stars because its one of the seven or eight CDs I listen to the most these days (as I approach the half-century mark). I hear a more refined, mature Jacquet on this album. The Herschel Evans/Chu Berry sound is still there, and live albums from this period (both out-of-print and more-recently-released JATP sessions) demonstrate that The King can still bring the house down when he wants, but this album shows a more restrained, even subdued Jacquet. I even sometimes hear a little bit more ... Read More

Illinois Jacquet was to the 1940's what Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock would be to the 50's and 60's: a precocious young cat with bags full of talent who sprang from Lional Hampton's big band, after putting Hamp on the map with Flying Home, to Count Basie's, where he delivered another knockout blow with The King! Only to realise that with his crowd pulling ability he was better off forming his own unit, and what a unit it was! Hand picked and honed down, he did what Louis Jordan described his own little band as doing; `made the blues jump!'

Taking trumpeter Joe Newman with him from the Basie ranks and keeping older brother Russell Jacquet close by (also on trumpet), Illinois included baritone sax to fatten the bottom end (Leo Parker on bari and Illinois on tenor sounded mighty together). ... Read More

Just three guys swingin' like the Count Basie Orchestra on too much coffee. No jazz snobbery here --- these guys are out to entertain [who knew that Illinois could do a dead-on impression of Ella Fitzgerald?].

Milt's organ playing is unique, and perhaps a little over-the-top. Jacquet has also been criticized for overdoing it, with honks and squeals [and it this case, scat solos]...but this is honest, enthusiastic, unpretentious music, and who can blame them for getting excited when they're swinging so hard?

Illinois made this record at the age of 65 with his newly-formed big band. (He still has it, now nearing 80.) And he still plays great. Good arrangements, good blowing from everybody. The band is a blend of new talents and well-seasoned veterans - Milt Hinton, John Faddis, Richard Wyands and - would you believe it? - Eddie Barefield, who coached 8 year old tap-dancing Illinois to win a talent contest sponsered by Cab Calloway (in whose band Illinois was to play later) and Marshall Royal, who hired 19 year old Jacquet for the Hampton band! My favorite number is Jacquet's own composition You Left Me All Alone in which he is the only soloist and plays in a romantic ballad style with a glorious mellow sound. I have two earlier versions of this piece but this is my preferred one. He really soars.
An astounding ... Read More

It's nice that Verve has made this excellent Argo release from 1964 available again. Illinois Jacquet is in great form, and gets excellent support from all involved, especially pianist Tommy Flanagan and guitarist Kenny Burrell. WHEN MY DREAMBOAT COMES HOME is taken medium-tempo and played in the bluesiest manner, which brings out the best of all three frontline men. Flanagan is especially impressive on LESTER LEAPS IN, on which he playes an attention-grabbbing intro and then lays out a sparkling single-note solo later on. Burrell takes a nice solo on CANADIAN SUNSET. Jacquet presents a rare treat on BLUES FOR THE EARLY BIRD by playing alto sax, but is super fine on STAR EYES, which is the highlight of the album. This is one of those albums that could easily have fallen through the cracks into oblivion ... Read More
