To be honest, I had fairly low standards for this work. There have been fairly dull performances of baroque operas, especially French ones, by American groups. And I had heard mixed reviews of their performance of Ariadne. But I was pleasantly surprised, for this recording surpasses some of those done by Reyne, which all seem to be good, but not terribly energetic. This, on the other hand, is probably the best period instrument recording ever attempted by an American group, especially when one compares it to those done by Pearlman and Boston Baroque, or those atrocious ones by Palmer. Perhaps Niquet, Haïm, Christie, Minkowski, or Rousset could better perform and record this opera, but as of yet, they haven't. And there wouldn't be a need to.

Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as pure and gracious ... Read More

I have recently discovered Purcell's music. While singing in choir as a young college student, I sang, "Sound the Trumpet" which I loved and am anxiously awaiting a recording of that piece I ordered off Amazon. During my search, I came upon this recording written on a completely different theme and took interest, since it was loosely based on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream."

The other reviewers have described the format of this semi-opera well and I agree that the music and singers perform fabulously. The only other thing I have to add is that I find music can sometimes be used as a vehicle to relax the mind and even problem solve and I find these works to be that kind of music that isn't too demanding of the listener. You can think, get homework or housework done, or best of all, sit and listen. ... Read More

Bach: St. Matthew Passion / Rolfe Johnson, Bonney, von Otter, Chance, Crook; Gardiner is such an amazing accomplishment that words such as amazing and stupendous come to mind. Bach has here created on of the finest religious works. Being a very devout person this verily touches my heart and soul very deeply. This is part Opera, church service and one can also talk about elements of the old Greek tragedy. The book-let is massive and very well done. It contains 124 pages. It contains 2 very well-written essays. The first on the "Bach's great passion" by Christoph Wolf and the second written by Gardiner "An Approach to Bach's Great Passion". The book-let contains the lyrics in 4 languages, latin, english, german and french. I definitely give this fine recording 5 stars.

Gardiner's recordings of Bach's "sacred masterworks" were considered near-definitive when they were initially released during the 1980's. Since then numerous other "period performance practice" versions of these works have appeared, yet despite competition from such early-music luminaries as Suzuki and Herreweghe (to name only two), Gardiner's have retained their benchmark status.

The earliest performance in this compilation is the *Mass in b Minor* (dating from 1982). This remains an extraordinary account of a much-recorded piece. Gardiner manages to integrate drama, exultation and contemplation in just proportion (something surprisingly few conductors achieve in this work). His tempi are often brisk, but never breathless, and his choir sings with admirably clear diction and astonishing agility. The only ... Read More

Castor et Pollux may not be Jean-Philippe Rameau's greatest operas, although it is a very fine opera, but it is certainly Rameau's most beautiful. The orchestral music is rich and full of life and colour, as always. The tunes are very good - we have the usual range of music here, from toe-tappers to sublimely beautiful arias.
The aria "Tristes apprêts, pâles flambeaux?", sung by Télaïre (Agnés Mellon), Acte I, Scène III, is one of the most beautiful and, indeed, sublime Baroque opera arias I've ever heard. Here this and you'll want to buy this opera.

The cast is strong - Howard Crook, Agnés Mellon, Véronique Gens, Sandrine Piau, Mark Padmore, Claire Brua and Sophie Daneman (before the wobbly vibrato heard in later recordings set in) - and Les Arts Florissants directed by William Christie are in top form. ... Read More

This work is a treat to lovers of baroque opera and I believe is one of the best pieces composed by Lully. Mr.Reyne and his orchestra have a great respect for this music and must have spent countless hours in practice to get this sound out.Not once does his orchestra miss the ideal of Lully in his music. The work also illustrates --with flattering words--how the king was idealised at this time and as such gives us a view into the kings court that very few history books can come close to.

HERREWEGHE'S UPBEAT TEMPOS COMBINED WITH FOUR TRULY OUTSTANDING SOLOISTS MAKE THIS RECORDING THE BEST OF THE MANY AVAILABLE RENDITIONS.

The composition of the Christmas Oratorio is estimated to be around 1734. This is more than the usual series of six self-contained cantatas for the Christmas period as there are many unifying factors at work. The most obvious is the Evangelist's narrative, which is based on the gospel readings for the season. the six commemorative days are: First Day of Christmas(Luke 2: 33-7)- Second Day of Christmas (Luke 2: 8-14)-Third Day of Christmas (Luke 2:15-20)-New Year (Feast of the Circumcision)(Luke 2:21)-Sunday after New Year(Matthew 2:1-6) and Epiphany (Matthew 2:7-12).

Bach's librettist(unknown) was careful to give each part its identity, meditating on various aspects of the relevant ... Read More
