Heaven forfend if there was some disaster and I had to flee my home suddenly, and couple only clutch a few Christmas CDs before going out the door - this would be the first one I would look for! When you look at the price of this disc you might think you are buying some really cheap collection culled from old, unwanted recordings by orchestras and choirs you've never heard of. This is not so. Rather, this CD contains some of the very best Christmas music from one of the world's leaders in classical music record production: the great Hyperion label from England. On this disc is one of the most beautiful recordings of In The Bleak Midwinter that I have ever heard. It's almost haunting. There's also some medieval songs that will become instant favorites, as well as a recording on an almost ... Read More

When the BBC production of The Little Prince was playing on our local public TV station two years ago, I was sick on the couch--sick enough that I was there to see it 4 times as it was repeated over the week. I suspect I had West Nile, because in addition to various roving physical symptoms, I was in a slightly odd, emotionally reflective state of mind for days--during which this musical score of The Little Prince simply engraved itself into my head. Eventually recoverying from pining over the eventual demise of my '81 Subaru and again able to stand up and not pass out, I ordered this CD and the music to this day elicits a quiet wonder unique from any other favored music I enjoy. Something very special about this seemingly simple work.

The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.
None of that tuning up, barking, la-la's or other cacophonous sounds here.

Music : A Lonesome Road - Paul Robeson sings spirituals and songs
This album consists of recordings Paul Robeson made in Britain durong the 1920s. He is accompanied by the great pianist Lawrence Brown or by a small orchestra led by Ray Noble. The songs on this disc are spirituals or pop songs of the era, and Robeson shines on every one of them. Robeson has an uncanny ability to make any song his own property, and this is especially true on his version of "Little Pal" - originally a saccharine semi-racist ballad written for Al Jolson. Robeson turns the song into a searing lament of an estranged father, and makes the song valid even today with his urgent, committed delivery. The majority of the songs on the cd are spirituals, and Robeson's versions are definitive in every sense of the word. All in all, there isn't a bad track here, and as an introduction to Robeson's ... These World War II recordings by the great Paul Robeson make for an interesting collection. Although Robeson's communist leanings are in fully evident in this collection, it should be noted that when these recordings were made the Soviet Union was a war-time ALLY of the United States. Robeson's renditions of these Soviet and left-leaning songs are also quite rousing, if one can get over the underlying Marxist-Leninist tone. As a patriotic American, sometimes I have qualms about seperating Robeson's outstanding talents from his political bent. Then again, taking into account the horrible treatment of African-Americans in the USA during Robeson's time, one can understand why he may have looked to the USSR and communism as an alternative to deeply entrenched racism and segregation.

Music : Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra
Listening to this at a friends house just showed my why I wasn't buying this. I've heard the songs before , but better. Whoever thinks that the voices have improved with age must be suffering with something. It has nothing to do with the absence of Chuck Negron, it simply is a lacklustre attempt at re-hashing some old material, presumably to keep the band going, gig-wise, as 3DN were not prolific songwriters.
The production is good, the vocals are...well..there (as they should be from people who have been singing since the mid sixties). I winced when I heard the strained vocals on Joy To the World. 'Never Been to Spain' sounds like it was recorded in a Vegas nightclub-no passion, just the right notes in the right place.
My question is, what did this album achieve? Nothing. If they want to put a couple ... Read More
