A unique collection of renaissance madrigals, grouped by country of origin and sung in the appropriate English, German, French, Spanish or (in this reviewer's humble opinion) most beautiful - Italian. The King's Singers' clear vocal range from bass to contra tenor is showcased in this CD, absolutely the best in its genre. It's only too bad the video (it was originally a five-part television series) is not available.

This two disc rendition of church hymns is very well done. The sound quality of the individual presentations is excellent. I wish only that the full lyrics to each hymn were included, but that really is a small oversight.

Music : A Baroque Christmas
If I had to pick one of my many Christmas CD's as an all-time favorite, it would probably be this one. The works here span the 1600's and include such masters as Gabrieli, Purcell and Monteverdi. The choir is so pure and joyous, it really gives a sense of what Christmas is all about. It's also a beautiful representation of the early Baroque period. If you need a break from the more popular holiday music, this is a great choice, and you could probably enjoy it any time of year. Most people would never know it's a Christmas CD! It's good to see that it's still available.

Music : The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour
There is not a global survey of secular music in Renaissance: every trend and national nuance is here. This CD compete for "The most varied musical program in history" prize!!!. King's singers produces a nice sound. Surely I like more the hilliard ensemble sonic landscape: they are more "hooty" and proyect more clearly the sound (with less vibrato) but never produced a more varied set like King's singers. If you have space for only 1 Renaissance CD, it MUST be this. You must purchase this cd: it is a reward for such an intelligent programme!!!!

This recording (actually a combination of two previously released vinyl recordings) provides a spectacular batch of trombone choir music. Featuring trombones ranging in size from sopranino to contrabass, it provides a performance worthy of "God's own instrument." A must for lovers of brass music, and especially for trombone afficianados.

This is a refreshing sampler of the music of the Renaissance, played by a beautiful ensemble. I wish there were more double reed ensembles out there, but even if there were, I'm sure this group would stand out as one of the better groups. There is much nuance and good phrasing in their playing, not to mention that the repertoire is a lot of fun. There is a lot of variety in the album, from noble, grand French court music to lively English dances...from Italian and German counterpoint to sweet English love songs.

To some, Renaissance music starts to all sound the same. Perhaps that's because they haven't quite heard all the different kinds of music that existed in that time. This disc is a great introduction to the repertoire, as well as a pleasing new look at the old music for someone more seasoned in the style. ... Read More
