Torcon 3, the 61st World Science Fiction Convention in Toronto in 2003, asked its members to rate the top science-fiction films of the 20th Century. "2001: A Space Odyssey" came out on top. This CD, which contains snippets of dialog as well as the music from the soundtrack, helps the film come alive again. People used to think of the Blue Danube Waltz as being old-fashioned and stodgy, conjuring up images of ballroom gowns and cavalry uniforms of Old Vienna. Never again. After "2001", it'll always be the perfect music for spaceship docking.

Teldec's THE LIGETI PROJECT II continues the collection, started by Sony's "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition", of Ligeti's complete works in performances overseen by the composer himself. This second disc contains four orchestral works, three of which were written in his "micropolyphony" style of the 1960s and 1970s, and the fourth a recently-rediscovered gem written as a student in 1951. These are performed by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by the young talent Jonathan Nott, and can be considered definitive. The earliest piece here is "Concerto Romanesc" (1951), a bit of juvenalia inspired by folk melodies the composer heard during musicological expeditions in Romania. I like the inventiveness of G. Ligeti. The Musica Ricercata Suite is a good and early example of his continuous search for new musical structures. I'm just a music listener, with no qualification to comment the interpretation of Mr. Aimard. I'm satisfied.

Arditti Qt gives the most intensely felt performances of Ligeti's very original chamber music masterpieces, String Quartet 1 & 2, accentuating the contrast between agressive passages and eerie quiet sections. Rest of the tracks includes some gems and premiere recordings. LaSalle Qt on DG also gives excellent reading of String Quartet No.2, worth checking out!

This disc contains rather mundane earlier choral works by Ligeti, composed under repression by Soviet dictatorship, many of them not without cerntain beauty though, but it also contains most chillingly atmospheric performance of Lux aeterna and other highly original choral masterpices, Three Fantasies after Holderlin and Hungarian Etudes, both performed brilliantly. Sony's recording technology is world's top class capturing amazing presence and detail, far better recorded than the DG version by Boulez.

This recording of Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Mechanical Music' gets five stars from me only because I happen to like this sort of thing, and 'good' music of this type which pushes the envelope in one direction or another is hard to come by. My immediate reaction to it is the amount of similarity I hear in some of the works to those of Frank Zappa's more serious instrumentals, especially to his 'signature' tune, 'Peaches En Regalia'. If I didn't know Sir Frank was heavily influenced by Edgar Varese, I would have started looking for Hungarian skeletens in the Zappa closet. I will say that if you are not a nut on having the 'complete' set of things, this CD is less interesting than Ligeti's vocal works, but just a bit more interesting than his conventional instrumental works.

I was rather disappointed with the selections and the orchestras that were featured. For such a large collection I thought I'd enjoy more of what was offered, but overall found it boring. In addition, I felt the audio quality was poor. In fact, there's only one piece out of the entire set I can say I really enjoyed and liked the performance. I would have found it a much better buy had there been more interesting and popular selections chosen. In hindsight, I would have done better buying individual discs rather than the collection.

This 6th installment of the Gyorgy Ligeti Edition contains one (Harmonies) of Ligeti's three pieces used by Stanley Kubrick in the '2001' soundtrack. For that reason alone, this CD is a bit more interesting than some of the others in this series. To me, as a representative of the average listener who happens to like a very broad range of musical styles, this CD is more interesting than Ligeti's string compositions, but not as interesting as his choral works. Part of the attraction may be the mystery of exactly what instrument is it which is performing some of these pieces. This mystery is simply not there when the pieces are done by violins and their relatives. While the mystery instumentation is nothing more than an organ, the performers make this hoary monster do a lot more than I am used to hearing in my local church. ... Read More

I think that this is really one of the best values you're going to find anywhere in the world of classical music, especially for beginners. You're getting 10 CDs, each filled almost to capacity, with the most famous works from the most famous composers in the history of classical music. The sound quality is excellent on every disc. While I would have made some replacements on the list of who was included, I feel that this collection is a must-buy for anyone interested in exploring classical music in depth. Quality is high, quantity is high, you really can't go wrong.

György Ligeti died in 2006 after a long and productive life as a composer who challenged the creativity of even his most avant-garde colleagues. Teldec produced a magnificent series of CDs, The Ligeti Project, which contain some of the most thrilling performances of the composer's well-known works as well as much of the esoterica: it is big, it is expensive in toto. This 4-disc album, while less inclusive, presents all of the works DGG has recorded and the price is affordable (just over $30) for such a solid survey. The works include pieces for solo instruments (organ, piano), chamber ensembles from quartets to small chamber orchestras, to the works for chorus, instrumental concerti and for large orchestra.
