I saw the Phantom on stage in Toronto. I did not see the movie until 2007. I enjoyed the movie much more than the play. When I saw the play I never got a good feeling of the story. Perhaps I was too close to the stage to get an overall look of it. When I saw the movie, because you see everything up close, it was much more understandable. I bought the two disc version of the dvd and was interested in the explanation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Shumacker of the casting and the production. I think they did exactly what they intended... made it enjoyable to a larger audience. As to the casting...the only one I did not enjoy was Patrick Wilson, but perhaps its because I thought the character was trying to control Christine too much. This is a brilliant work combining the compositional artistry of Alan Hovhaness with the music from the orchestra of the sea, the great whales themselves. To be listened to over and over again as there are always some new nuances that won't have been heard on previous visits.

I have loved this movie from forever and the soundtrack now lulls me to sleep.

Hovhaness wasn't the typical American composer, so his music isn't all that well known beyond Mysterious Mountain. However, he wrote a wealth of music, including almost 60 symphonies. Delos is the label that has recorded more music of his than any other label, much of it with the composer conducting, and this is the first of two double-CD compilations of those recordings. The only reason I say this is the better one is that it's more diverse, and contains two of my absolute favorites. Prayer of St. Gregory is a geogeous piece for trumpet and strings, and I simply have not heard very much music that betters it. Beyond that, A Rose Tree Blossoms is a beautiful a capella chourus piece that is unfortunetly too short. The rest of the compilation contains some very interesting music. ... Read More

This CD introduced me to the work of Paul Creston. Creston is, perhaps, a quintessential American composer. Born into a poor family, he basically taught himself to become a composer, an organist, and a pianist. His work did pay off, as is demonstrated by these works. Especially reccommended is his Symphony No. 3 "Three Mysteries". For anyone who loves American music, this CD is a must have.

These are the finest versions of the 3 Rhapsodies ever put on CD. Even better than the composer's own. Conductor Schwarz has a long term relationship with the composer and it clearly shows. He leads the wonderful Seattle Orchestra through ethereal and heavenly moods and sonics on all the compositions here and the accoustic in The Seattle opera was made for this. The Koch sound engineers provide SUPERB sound with great depth, clarity, wide dynamic range and rich warm textures. I don't think a better sound stage could be provided no matter what the music. Simply uplifting. The rest of the CD pieces are: Symphony #38 (M Soul Is A Bird/Lullaby) and Concerto #10 for piano, trumpet and strings. Also done as well as can be. This Cd is a must for fans of Hovhaness and his Armenian roots.
