Who could complain about Krupa and Rich? The only problem is that there is not enough of it. It didn't last very long, but what was there was very good.

I can't fathom why this one isn't more popular. Krupa teams up with the great Roy Eldridge and Anita O'Day to produce one swingin, sensational recording. This album could entice the most reclusive of nuns to get up and start shaking it. It's a whole lot of fun to listen to, and you can tell that they all had one hell of a great time getting together and creating this one. It's definitely Krupa's show, and he's the driving force behind the magic. He's the champion drummer of the Swing Era, and believe me, this one is all about swing! This is one of my favorite efforts and another prime example of why he is so revered among the greats (especially rock n' roll legends like John Bonham, Keith Moon, et al...). Check out his jaw dropping, blistering solo on "Wire Brush Stomp" and see for yourself ... Read More

This legendary and historic recording documents the 1963 reunion of one of the most famous groups in jazz history. Benny Goodman reassembled his ORIGINAL quartet from the 1930s (Benny-clarinet, Teddy Wilson-piano, Lionel Hampton-vibes, and Gene Krupa-drums)to record a relaxed and inspired album that has the feeling of a late-night jam session. All parties involved are giants of jazz and are widely acknowledged as most important figures on their respective instruments. Despite the huge stature of each of these musicians, they play with such dynamic interplay and cooperation that really helped to define small group jazz as we know it today. Benny is in his most inventive and swinging mood since his forties recordings and it is obvious that he is inspired by his old friends. Lionel Hampton shines here ... Read More

...is presented by this splendid four-disc set. Disc One heralds the formation of Krupa's own band and the early numbers are hot and jazzy, up-tempo, pure instrumental, soloists strutting thier stuff and Krupa letting folks know this is not going to be a "one man band." Nothing revolutionary about the jazz but the tunes are great.

Next, he experiments with singers, at first just for a few refrains--until he connects with Anita O'Day. Then things absolutely sizzle and skyrocket!

O'Day appears throughout most of Discs Two and Three and in my opinion these numbers mark the high-water point for Krupa's band. O'Day seemingly never met a song she couldn't wrap into her own distinctive style. She's no vibrato, but her terrific inflection may have been exceeded only by Billie Holiday. Here's ... Read More

Very good sound quality and some unusual recordings. I never knew Krupa ever worked with a harmonica player. Includes some tracks I assumed would never make it to CD. My only negative comment is the one awful photo which looks like a photocopy.

Gene was a personal friend. I borrowed this LP from him back in the 60's and loved it then. It's one of those albums on a short list I've had, and have continued to check on over the years for a re-issue.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the real Gene Krupa, certainly the player I knew, instead of the guy way up top on a big stage.

By the time this was recorded Gene had many years of small group playing behind him. As a small group player, he played in venues where you could walk up to him and talk with him off or on the bandstand.

This CD absolutely portrays that intimacy and Gene's personality. From knowing him, I can tell he was excited to be home in Chicago and at The London House which was a favorite venue of his.

The recording quality is such that you ... Read More
