"Gamma Ray" is well identified as the band of Godfather of euro power metal Kai Hansen (ex "Helloween"). This is the third live album from the German outfit following "Skeletons in the Closet" (2003). A 2CD set including a total of 22 songs mostly concentrating on the post -Ralf Scheepers*- era.

This release stands as a momentum celebrating the band's first headlining North American tour of 2006 (NOT 2007) recorded at the "Medley" in Montreal, Canada. What hardcore fans should probably keep in mind is that the show capture here is in support of the "Majestic" studio album, not of the current "Land of the Free 2" opus. In an attempt to update the package the band has included four songs recorded during the current 2008 European tour.

Given that it has merely been ... Read More

Ever since Kai took over the vocals for Gamma Ray in 1995, all their albums have been outstanding. It blows my mind how consistent they are in sticking to their guns over the years and yet showing no sign of slowing down or wearing out. And it's truly mind boggling how underrated this band is! Granted, their music in not very "innovative" (except maybe for Walls of Jericho, which was revolutionary for its time) and the ever present influence of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden is noticeable in many of their songs, but who cares? They deliver great and true Heavy Metal over and over again: powerful, melodic, fresh, technically impeccable, and actually mood enhancing (it never fails to boost up my spirits, even during tough times). And the fact that Kai is such a nice and down-to-earth guy (I was lucky ... Read More

it was pretty late, so I got up this morning played Land of the Free 2, then popped this baby in. After two years of waiting and listening to iTunes, I was totally blown away. It was F'n worth the wait. The music and lyrics are fantastic. In the conventional order of things, this would be the appetizer, Somewhere Out In Space is the side dish, and Land of the Free I is the main course served by Gamma Ray. To get off topic, why is there sight down? No one can get on. Their third best album, or second depending on who's listening to it. For the casual listener, get tracks Introduction through New World Order. Otherwise, you better get the whole album.

I feel disappointed with Gamma Ray: The introduction of the song #4 "HELL IS THY HOME" sounds exactly like Judas Priest's song "Leather Rebel" from CD "Painkiller" (1990). This is a total shame, ¿what about copyrights?. I saw Gamma Ray in concert this year along with Helloween in the "hellish tour" and I liked their show, but now i am very angry with them because I pay to hear NEW and ORIGINAL stuff. All in all, this CD deserves two stars because the music is well executed but it lacks of originality.

Whatever caused founding guitarist Kai Hansen to leave Helloween in 1988, just after the release of the band's classic Keeper of the Seven Keys albums, it turned out to be a benefit for power metal fans. Helloween managed without him and kept releasing (mostly) good albums, and now we had Hansen's new band Gamma Ray making power metal that, to no one's surprise, sounded a lot like Helloween.

Released in 1990, Heading for Tomorrow was Gamma Ray's debut album. "Sounds like Helloween" is the easiest way to describe it, especially since at that time, Helloween was the only other band making music in this anthemic, hyper-melodic power metal style. These days there are tons of bands in the genre, but 20 years ago Kai Hansen's bands essentially invented it. There are a couple of duds on Heading for Tomorrow, ... Read More

Now this is a cool marketing move/way of doing things. After ten years of Gamma Ray we get the best of album. but with a twist. The bands fans voted for their favourite three tracks on each GR album and the ones with the most votes got either remixed or totally re-recorded by the bands new line up. This is both an excellent idea based around the concept of interactive fan-dom but also somewhat of a bugbear. More on that later...

But to start with this collection is a pretty good selection of tunes. For the record all of disc 1 and tracks 1-3 on disc 2 are new recordings. Songs 4-10 of the second disc are remastered versions. And it's hard to argue with songs like Lust for Life, Heaven Can Wait and Changes. Sure, Ralf sang 'em much better than Kai but they really do stand up regardless. Also the production ... Read More

Music : Insanity & Genius
After their somewhat uneven second album Sigh No More, German power metal gods Gamma Ray came roaring back with their 1993 album Insanity & Genius.

Insanity & Genius is an extremely solid album full of melodic power metal anthems. Soon to be departing vocalist Ralf Scheepers gives an energetic performance, and founder Kai Hansen's guitar work and songwriting are every bit as good as they were on the band's debut. No Return, Future Madhouse, and Heal Me are some of the album's better songs, as is the excellent title track. The band's cover of Birth Control's "Gamma Ray" is the album's highlight. Kai & company make it seem as though the song was written just for them. This is top notch power metal all the way, and it only gets better from here!

I suppose it goes without saying that Gamma ... Read More

8.Power Plant by: Gamma Ray

Music : Power Plant
German power metal gods Gamma Ray closed out the century in style with their 1999 album Power Plant.

Power Plant doesn't quite reach the same level of perfection that was found on Land of the Free, but it is an extremely solid power metal album that is on par with Insanity & Genius or Heading for Tomorrow. This is epic progressive power metal like only Kai Hansen can deliver, full of fist-pumping metal anthems (Heavy Metal Universe being the obvious example). I suppose there are an abundance of metal clichés on this album, but since when is that a bad thing? This is a power metal album after all! There are plenty of great songs on Power Plant, but my absolute favorite is the band's cover of the Pet Shop Boys (of all people) tune It's a Sin. If ever a pop single was crying out to be covered by a metal band, it ... Read More

10.Sigh No More by: Gamma Ray

Music : Sigh No More
Kai Hansen & company didn't waste any time following up their 1990 debut album Heading for Tomorrow. Sophomore album Sigh No More was released just one year later.

Listening to Sigh No More 15 years after its original release, you can understand where the band was coming from and picture them trying to define the Gamma Ray sound and perhaps distinguish it from that of Hansen's first band Helloween. At the time though, and after a very Helloween-like debut, you can see how this album might have come as a shock. Sigh No More is less epic and melodic than its predecessor, and is a good deal more aggressive and raw. Still, it's a decent album, and is definitely a Kai Hansen album. Besides, it holds up a lot better than what Helloween was dishing out at the time (Pink Bubbles Go Ape, anyone?).

I suppose it goes without ... Read More
