Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written.

In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed.

Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in terms of inherited works. He was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and also a friend of G F Handel. Even thought Bach and Handel are better know nowadays, Telemann was a reknown musician in his own lifetime.

The Tafelmusik (meaning Table Music to be played in theb ackground at banquets)by Telemann is probably his most celebrated collection of music. Composed in 1733 it demonstrates his supreme skill in handling a diversity of musical genres from German, to French to Italian fashions.
and a variety of instruments. The work was used as a guideline by many other composers to familiarise themselves with the new styles.

Many famous names can be seen on the subscription list for the first prints; above all Handel's. ... Read More

Wind-instrument players are small-muscle athletes. Their virtuosity is based on innate physical endowments. Like it or not, it's so. The velocity of recorderist Michael Schneider's tongue-and-finger biathlon, on Telemann's Concerto in E minor, outpaces an ordinary person's fluency as much as Lance Amstrong's legs outpeddle us. Telemann's 100 or so concerti - many for woodwinds or brass - offer Olympic musical hurdles for wind players, and that's where the fun comes from.

But Telemann also seems infallibly to grasp the expressive potentials of the instruments he writes for, and to exploit them idiomatically. Did he perhaps play every instrument in the orchestra? It sounds as if he might have. The Concerto in D minor for Two Chalumeaux, for instance. The chalumeau was a brief experiment that ... Read More

I won't bore anyone with a long technical or artistic treatise of this CD. I do wish to say that Christopher Hogwood and the AAM have done a wonderful job in performing these three compositions. I especially appreciate and enjoy Immer's use of the authentic-era keyed-but-still-valveless trumpet on the Concerto in E-flat. This explains why the trumpet heard here can sometimes sound sort of "rough" compared to our modern, valved trumpets. I have heard other CDs featuring this same piece, and can say those performances sound better because of the modern trumpet. Well, I guess I just enjoy the authentic performances so we can tell as best as possible what music must have sounded like long ago. I enjoy the comparisons so I can appreciate the development of instruments. I also really enjoy the Organ Concerto. ... Read More

A music student told me once that some musicians/groups/etc deliberately record obscure works because nobody else does, so it won't matter so much if they've got talent or not because they don't have much 'competition'. Well I was very eager to give this box a shot because at that time I was a huge fan of MAK & also Bach so I thought this would be good. I wasn't disappointed in the least; MAK can REALLY play, no doubt about it!! The fast parts are very precise & clean, and the slow parts have lots of feeling. The ensemble on these discs is almost a 'dream team' of baroque musicians: Goebel, Manfred Kraemer, Jaap ter Linden, Karlheinz Steeb, Phoebe Carrai, Andreas Staier, Wilbert Hazelzet, Florian Deuter... Some might be offended by the comparision but I would say that MAK's recordings (not just this album) ... Read More

Big, brash, and brazen, these festive cantatas - literally brazen since they feature the brass of the Friedemann Immer Trumpet Consort, together with the very muscular Collegium Bach Choir Siegen with the Hannover Hofkapelle orchestra - and very German both in musical style and performance. Just as much as Telemann overshadowed Bach in his lifetime, Bach has come to overshadow Telemann today, but they sprang from the same musical wonderland of Protestant Germany and these three cantatas composed by Telemann in his most German manner sound a great deal like Bach.

Most Telemann lovers today are best acquainted with his works in the French style, his sonatas for recorders, his Paris Quartets, his chamber cantatas. The compositions on this CD, written for large forces in Frankfurt and Eisenach, that "Luther" city, ... Read More

This three-disk re-issue includes the Telemann Festive Cantatas, conducted by Ulrich Stötzel and with the Friedemann Immer Trompeten-Consort, which I reviewed a few days ago, but which is now unavailable. I have not yet heard the other two CDs in the set, but the price is right, even if they are not as interesting as the Festives.
