This is the best rockabilly music ever recorded along with the Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

This is a treasure of late sixties LA country music.

I remember listening to Christine's Song back when this CD (well, it was something called an alblum) first came out. The music of this double CD stands up pretty well to time. I especially like the duets of Graham Parsons and Chris Hillman. The reason I purchased this CD was past enjoyment of Graham Parson's collaboration with EmmyLou Harris.

After all "new" albums of recycled Flying Burrito Brothers material, this is a real treat! The Burritos sound great live, a little ragged, but that is some of their charm--the beginnings of alt-country at its best. The mix is excellent and Gram's breaking vocals come across better here than on some of their studio albums. It is easy to pick out Chris Hillman's harmonies as well. A great sound from a band like no other. The material on this CD is a rare find.

Nice package of the final two Burrito albums. The 3rd is probably the weakeast of the three studio lps, but there are some good moments; "Can't you Hear me Callin'" and "Tried So Hard" most notable.Rick Roberts replaced Gram Parsons for this record, and some of his stuff is a little too commercial for what the Burritos had been doing. Not enough of Sneeky Pete and Bernie Leadon on this album either. The "Last of the Red Hots" cd smokes, with newcomer Al Perkins on steel and guitar burning it up, along with Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke.Good material, although the loss of Bernie Leadon is felt here as well. The bluegrass set is okay; could have done without the overplayed "Orange Blossom Special'.Two bonus tracks, both Gene Clark songs are included: the 45 version of "Tried So Hard", and Gene's "Here Tonight", with ... The Flying Burrito Bros. definitive collection is the one you want for your collection featuring both classic albums with Gram Parsons, including the landmark debut,The Gilded Palace Of Sin,and the follow up,Burrito Deluxe, the one key element that makes this compilation stand out from the rest is,you get both albums complete and all the tracks in order the way they were originally recorded, all on one disc, where as I've noticed on other compilations the tracks are mixed and scattered, plus there's three bonus tracks on here,a prime example of Parsons' cosmic American music,The Train Song,I've never heard anything like this before and Dave Dudley's,Six Days On The Road, great instrumentation on this one and there's Buck Owens',Close Up The Honky Tonks, which sounds like a demo. After listening to their follow up,Burrito ... Read More

As you listen to these recordings you can't help wonder if Gram Parsons was really living out the title of this Flying Burritos cd, including nine tracks that were intended to be placed on a so-called true country record, then of course Parsons left the band before anything was completed,as you listen to Parsons on these recordings they lack energy, singing flat and out of key, unlike what you hear on his early recordings, with the Byrds,The Int. Submarine Band and then later the excellent GP/Grievous albums,so,one has to think that these recordings must be demos that were never finished, included also are three Emmylou Harris duets left over from the GP recordings, which are excellent and so is,Dim Lights, which really stands out and Sneaky Pete's steel guitar is right on the money, the bottom line is this isn't the Gram Parsons ... Since Jeff (the reviewer below) is the individual who turned me on to this album in the mid 70's, I would have to agree with him 100%. This album not being available on CD was the driving force that got me to learn how to rip vinyl to WAV.
It doesn't get any better than this.

Released 1969,this is the essential Flying Burritos,The Gilded Palace Of Sin,in which you'll never hear anything like it,a prime example the first track,Cristine's Tune, with Sneaky Pete's dist-roar-ted steel,I've heard steel players play rock-n-roll,nothing like this, unreal, there's some good steel players out there like Buddy Emmons,Jimmy Day,Ralph Mooney,Tom Brumley,Norm Hamlet,Paul Franklin,Sneaky Pete is damn sure close to being in this caliber, almost carrying this album, the songs and the lyrics are also strong with the tight harmonies, with Gram Parsons singing most of the lead vocals and contributing most of the writing with Hillman and Ethridge, such as,Do You Know How It Feels,Sin City,Wheels, and a fine cover of,Do Right Woman, and the only one weak song on here being,Hippie Boy,this is essential and a classic like you've never ... You better like it a bit rough, but if you do, then this is a great album. I am a huge Burrito fan - well not the post Hillman Burritos, but the first five albums - and I wore out more vinyl copies of this than any other Burrito album. No doubt about it, Gilded Palace of Sin was a groundbreaker. I can still remember the first time I heard it. It was stunning! What the heck are Hillman and Parson up to?? But I like it. And Christine's tune is absolutely perfect. The tune. Not the quality of the recording. But overall, Burrito Deluxe is more gritty and, at times, more engaging. Side one (of the vinyl) is like sitting in a smoke-filled country bar listening to a gritty country bar band. My favorite is the Dylan cover, If You Gotta Go. I try to sing along, but I just can't keep up with the pace. And, Sneaky Pete is downright wicked on this cut. ... Read More

There are a good number of "purists" out there who believe on the 8th day God created Gram Parsons. Parsons was , in my opinion, over rated. Not that he wasn't good at what he did, he just wasn't the inventor of country influenced rock n' roll that some think he was. Many of these Parsonites
could never see the validity of a Burrito Brothers without him. I've never understood this reasoning. How could there be a Byrds without Gene Clark or David Crosby? Could Genesis survive without Peter Gabriel or the Who without Moon? Of course they could, and did. And the Burritos picked up and carried on without Parsons or Hillman. They should have been given a chance. There's a good deal of good music on FLYING AGAIN and AIRBORNE that was never given a chance and was unjustly overlooked. I had these two on vinyl and kept hoping for a CD to come out, ... Read More
