I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a steal with a list price under four dollars, and the former was a truly good compilation of many uplifting, diverse, impactful, and pleasant pieces. I am satisfied with my purchases and have filled the gap in my music collection. I can't see Opera getting better than this and the other title I mentioned. Enjoy!

I don't want to waste anybody's time by writing a long review. If you like Figaro, this is the recording you want.

I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is by far the most enjoyable production of Mozart's opera. I am especially partial to Te Kanawa, but all the other participants did a great job. As far as I know, this is the only recording that features a young-sounding Barbarina. In most others she sounds like a mature woman, which I find annoying.

Get it and emoy!

This, one of Mozart's finest, most elegant opera, is performed superbly in this recording. Bartoli is absolutely glorious here . Thank God she recorded this before her voice became smaller, and more "chirpy" sounding as it has been in her last few recordings. I had not heard Cuberli before this CD, but she has now become one of my favorite soprano's. Her high notes are velvety and "regal". The only complaint I have about her, is that in "Come Scoglio" she seems to be slightly flat on her high B-flat (the high C that follows is just fine though...go figure!) Also, Cuberli's and Bartoli's voice blend very well in their duets. I don't think there was ever a better Ferrando than Kurt Streit. He has a beautiful lyric voice, and he has great control and ease in his upper register. His "Un aura amorosa" is ... Read More

In my search for a perfect Nozze di Figaro--not one that was flawless, but one that suited my taste best--I listened with a merciless ear to several choices. I was given a copy of the Karajan recording with Schwarzkopf--not because my parents thought I would like it, but because they didn't want it--and decided to replace it, as I find the Susanna in that one very irritating (if you don't like the Susanna, you don't like the recording), and the sound quality bad enough that even Elizabeth Schwarzkopf is difficult to appreciate (Schwarzkopf recorded another Figaro with Giulini, which is the recording you will hear about most of the time, not the one I'm whining about).

I listened to the Bohm recording when it came on satellite radio one day. That one is ear candy, but honestly, it's not ... Read More

Typical bel canto opera with a passionate tenor (José Carreras) and a cold soprano (Montserrat Caballé). Bonus tracks are with the always excellent Leyla Gencer.
-------

Read More

7.Verdi: Requiem / Marc, Meier, Domingo, Furlanetto; Barenboim by: Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo, Alessandra Marc, Waltraud Meier, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Chicago Symphony Chorus

Music : Verdi: Requiem / Marc, Meier, Domingo, Furlanetto; Barenboim
Because the Verdi Requiem has been gloriously recorded by a number of great condcutors (Giulini, Karajan, Fricsay, Reiner, De Sabata, and Toscanini come to mind), a good-enough conductor like Barenbloim is bound to fall a bit flat. He has a trump card, however, in the Chicago Sym. and its world-lass chorus, who perform amazingly here. Thanks to the clear, dynamic sound quality, every aspect can be heard perfectly. The Verdi Requiem is a devil to balance, but the engineers have done as well as any I have ever heard.

Among the soloists, Domingo and Meier do best -- they are among the most satisfying to be heard on modern recordings. Furlanetto is consistently too loud and emotionally flat; Marc has a gorgeous voice but not much temperament, so she can't carry the drama of the concluding Libera Me -- in fact, ... Read More

8.All Star Classic Christmas Album from: Deutsche Grammophon

Music : All Star Classic Christmas Album
These aren't your traditional Christmas carols but a more classical selection. The Corelli Pastorale performed on this disc is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard in my life. Ramirez' Sanctus performed by Jose Carreras is light and joyous as are most of these classical pieces. Sarah Brightman's Pie Jesu is hauntingly beautiful, and these pieces blend in with age old favorites like Bach's Jauchzet, frohlocket and Handel's For unto us a Child is born. If you're like me and you grow weary of hearing the same Jingle Bells carols this is a refreshing addition to your collection.

Karajan`s conduction is magnificent. Mr Ramey is de Best Don Giovanni ever to play the role. Baltsa as Donna Elvira is simply great. Burchuladze plays a very powerful role as the commendatore. For Opera fans this is a must have version

This is intensely beautiful music-making, deeply felt and exhiliarating for the listener. The ensemble singing on this disc reminds me of the possibility of harmony in the world - inspires me. Barenboim and Bartoli get everyting right: tempi, emphasis, musical line. I only wish I had found it sooner.
