This astonishing collection sounds great but I do have a gripe or two. For one, where's "Li'l Liza Jane" and for another, I would have loved to have heard a live version of Hank's Jambalaya 'cause Fats rips the song up live.
The omission of "Liza" is especially glaring since it was recorded for Imperial...

Imperfect as it is, this collection will keep you rockin' and rollin' with the Fat Man and insofar box sets go - this is a fine collection.

They key difference between this single CD hits collection and the earlier "My Blue Heaven" is that this one uses the sped-up versions as originally released. "My Blue Heaven" and the ACE singles compilations present the songs restored to correct pitch as performed but not released. For those that grew up with the Fat Man this CD has the familiar pitch.

This CD was originally issued in 1993. It's been released with this title & "Christmas Gumbo" by the Right Stuff Label, a Capitol label. This 2006 release contains the same music as the two other releases, but has the third different cover the set has seen. The CD opens with two original Domino tracks. "I Told Santa Claus" has Domino's famous piano bounce with some jaunty horns, "Eenie meenie minie moe, baby, please don't say no no no." "Christmas is a Special Day" is the other original with a loping beat, a pedestrian melody and a trite lyric, "Since that day, we're never lorn, that's the day our Savior's born; Yes one day when we were lost, yes he died upon the cross, yes he died for one & all so our souls wouldn't be lost." Perhaps surprisingly, one of the best tracks is "Rudolph ... Read More

Music : They Call Me the Fat Man: The Legendary Imperial Recordings
A couple of things are obvious if you search the material available for Fats Domino. Many of the titles are "out of stock" - which could mean either they are temporarily unavailable or are simply out of print - and this one does not even turn up under his name (at least I couldn't find it there). I found it by searching under the sub-title "They Call Me The Fat Man."

This is surprising because, simply put, this entry from the EMI Legends of Rock n' Roll Series is THE best single collection of Fats Domino you are going to find, 4 CDs containing 100 of his best offerings recorded at Imperial from 1949 to 1962.

It also contains a magnificent 84-page booklet with a fold-out back cover showing reproductions of many of his LP covers, extensive liner notes with 29 pages written by Jeff ... Read More

Musically, this record is incredible. There's a perfect subtle mix of modern elements like synth and slide guitar that give it an updated sound, but it still sounds like classic Fats. This ranks as high as anything he's ever done. Fats Domino is a living legend. This is the kind of record that makes you feel grateful to be alive.

Back when I was a young teen, Fats was the reigning King. I have all his songs and have seen him in person many times. His piano playing and his laid back, simple approach to his music are dear to me. I still sing his songs because they are deep seated in my psyche from years of listening. Things were simple then and things in my life were good. Still are, and I still bring out his music to make me happy and take me back to a wonderful time! Thanks Fats!
