Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as ... Read More

EARLY MUSIC NEWS COMMENTING ON THE 'CONSORT OF MUSICKE': "THEY COULD HAVE NO BETTER OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SKILL THAN IN THE MAGNIFICENT MADRIGALS BY MONTEVERDI'S ATTENTION TO CLARITY OF PRONUNCIATION AND THE NATURAL RHYTHMIC MOVEMENT OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE...HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRENGTH OF THE GROUP." And in addition the Consort is distinguished by vitality, excitement and progressive exploration. Enough said!!!

Montrverdo's eighth book of madrigals was the last to be published in his lifetime and represents a summation of his work in this genre. As its title implies, the eighth book is divided into two sections, devoted respectively to madrigals of war and madrigals of love.

In his long preface to the volume, Monteverdi referred to the 'humours' in man (an ... Read More

Recorded in 1983, this precociously insightful performance of Carlo Gesualdo's Fifth Book of Madrigals in Five Parts was unavailable for a long time, so long that I lost track of it. This morning I came upon my original 1983 CD on a dusty shelf. I couldn't remember it in detail but I knew it would be worth re-hearing because it featured the youthful Emma Kirkby, the finest madrigalist soprano of her generation. I presume the sound quality of the remastered CD will be equal to the original, which was at the acme of British recording technology at the time.

Gesualdo's Fifth and Sixth books of madrigals were both published in 1611, though the composer claimed that he'd written them fifteen years earlier. In either case, Gesualdo ranks with Monteverdi as the founder of the "secunda prattica" ... Read More

'NOW DOES THE GLORIOUS DAY APPEAR' ON THIS DISC WITH GLORIOUS SINGING!

Purcell compositions for Queen Mary span the whole of her brief reign. He provided music for her coronation, on April 11,1689; for the formal celebraton of her birthday on April 30 each year; and for her funeral, on March 5, 1695. At the coronation of William and Mary his 'I was glad' was one of 9 anthems performed during this ceremony.

Purcell, in his position as Abbey Organists has tailored the music with precision. The opening passage is in stately block chords-straightforward for the choir to co-ordinate while proceeding along the nave, and arriving in their places just in time to watch the conductor for the closing bars. Later in the service the 2nd anthem by Purcell was sung:"Praise the Lord, ... Read More

Music : Beethoven: Piano Concerto 5 & Choral Fantasy (EMI)
Melvyn Tan and the London Classical Players directed by Roger Norrington completed their Beethoven cycle (the nine symphonies and the piano concertos) in January 1989 with this polished performance of the composer's grand 'Emperor' Concerto coupled with a fairly rare recording of the Fantasia in C major, Op. 80, a work which, according to the liner notes, has only survived because it is by Beethoven, but which Norrington and his team seem determined to bring to the forefront by means of an explosive performance that leaves, for my mind at any rate, nothing to be desired.

As with the other Beethoven recordings, the tempi are comparatively fast; Stefan Vladar and the Capella Istropolitana on Naxos need, for example, nearly two and a half minutes more for the Adagio un poco mosso (which on their recording ... Read More

This is a very fine presentation of some of the greatest madrigals ever written. Part of a whole series of recordings of the famous Books of Madrigals by Monteverdi, this double CD presents earlier recordings made by a group of distinguished singers led by Emma Kirkby together with Anthony Rooley's Consort of Musicke. One of the seminal groups of the Early Music movement, the Consort is known for its contributions to the performance of Renaissance music through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
I found this collection useful for the historical connotations of the program. One of the most important aspects is the birth of the new style in the first years of the seventeenth century. With the last six pieces of the Fifth Book, Monteverdi specifically demands the use of continuo instruments and through this he clearly marks ... Read More

When I purchased this 5-disc set by Andrew Parrot, I had failed to notice that this recording is at the minimum-setting of Bach recordings. No choir, but one individual voice per vocal part. Now normally, I like a nice big full choir sound, so before listening I had some doubts as to this recording would appeal to me.
Well, I must say, now that I've listened to it a couple of times, it's really a wonderfully pure effect, and I really DO like it. The sound isn't bleak at all, and at times the four interacting voices do sound like a small choir. I really do not know what Bach's original intentions were, but this recording is really a joy to listen to, and that's what counts most for me.
