What a tone! David Oistrakh was a virtuoso, of that there is no doubt. What makes his playing stand apart, though, is his rich, full, round tone. Oistrakh does not draw attention to his technical skill, he draws attention to the music.

These duets, with Vladimir Yampolsky on piano, were recorded at Abbey Road in London in early 1956, and first released by EMI in 1957. It's a fine set of "showpieces," beginning with Tartini's sonata in G minor, "The Devil's Trill." Slow lyrical numbers like Debussy's "Clair de lune" and Ysaye's "Extase" are interspersed with livelier numbers such as de Falla's "Siete canciones populares espanolas" and Koday's "Three Hungarian Folk-dances."

This is an easy recommendation for anyone who loves great violin music, another truly "Great ... Read More

This CD is very relaxing. It is also all Classical Music. It is perfect for someone that enjoys Classical Music, it would not be a good choice for someone who enjoys relaxing Nonclassical Music. We play it during diner preparation and dinner, and also sometimes when reading.

While not always frightening as much as classical music with a Halloween theme, this is a fine recording to play at parties if the guests fancy this kind of music. The title refers to the Devil's Dance, for violin & piano from the film Witches of Eastwick, a work composed by John Williams. It is followed by A Transylvanian Rhapsody from the comic film Young Frankeinstein. The most famous piece of all "Danse Macabre" was Saint Saens' ghoulish work that nearly caused his mother a heart attack at the premire. Using stage effects like smoke and mist, Saint Saens had dancing skeletons waltzing on stage. The Devil Trill Sonata by Tartini has a frightening story behind it. It was rumored that the composer dreamt that the Devil gave him the score to this violin piece. It is played at an impossible speed ... Read More

The tempi are plenty fast, and yet Kaler doesn't miss a note. The sound is just fine, and his tone never deteriorates into the squawking which characterizes some performances.
And yet, I find him rather dull. I encourage the reader to at least sample albums by Vengerov (who records four of the six) and Zehetmair to see what a bit more passion brings to these works. 3.5/5

Sound is not very good... The pieces are also not the best recorded... Do yourself a favor, buy Neveu's recording of Tzigane

To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, ... Read More

In 1972, with just 36 years of fertile and creative existence, thanks to a brilliant and promissory career as virtuosi and sensitive musician, the fate decided for Michael Rabin, he walked other paths.

His level of interpretative excellence, dictated insurmountable standards (Vienawski' s Violin Concertos, Paganini' s caprices and Kreisler's miniatures, GLazunov, Introducion and rondo) as well as basically all he played conferred him (he reminds in intensity to Ginette Neveu) of a sort of magic effluvium . That flaming passion that joined the level of mercurial technique, astonishing tune and first rate temperament, simply left a world seriously wounded, because a soloist of his stature has been irreplaceable until these days, and the career of so many famous soloists surely would not have been overshadowed ... Vengerov has become more mature in his technique and interpretation. He is giving less concerts - only 30 concerts in 2005, as compared with 110 in 2004 - he is determined to be disciplined. He is also learning a lot of other things to broaden his horizon, which would help enrich his music.

In this newly released album, he continues to demonstrate his virtuosity, adding new flavours to these favourite pieces. He continues to master those technically demanding pieces with relative ease, but he is capable of making them sound more difficult.

He is one of those violinists that could produce the sweetest sound on earth (the change of violin does not seem to have any effect on his playing). Kreisler's Liebesleid and Liebesfreud sounded afresh, although Vengerov has made them just a tiny bit too ... Read More

there is no better violinist than zehetmair (at least of those who record). he is so ridiculously good he makes this repertoire sound better, perhaps, than it was intended to be.

ridiculous. wonderful.
