Along with Armeda, Anna Bolena, here is a jewel from the past. Maria is wonderful. The supporting cast was very good for the time, but what a difference today with standards and supportive artists better and better rehearsed.

I originally had this as 5 stars, but then I recalled that the album came without a libretto, so I knocked off 1/2 star. While I am not usually a fan of Karajan's conducting, I thought he moved things along crisply, so no deductions there. But opera's about singing, and this one has Franco Corelli and Leontyne Price, two of the most exciting singers of their era or any other. Add Giulietta Simionato and Ettore Bastianini to the mix and you have over two hours of glorious sound.

This Trovatore transmits both the thrill and the apprehension of the live "legendary" performance under Karajan. The orchestra itself sounds beautiful, but sometimes the conductor makes it too loud, as he seems to have forgotten that this was not a symphony, and he should have protected the singers' voices, instead of covering them.

Leontyne Price, obviously possessing the right voice for Leonora, is uneven. Her "Tacea la notte placida" is strained and somewhat harsh, whereas "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is sung with beautiful technique and pianissimo. Perhaps it took her some time to overcome her stage fright, but overall, her sounds are not round enough.

Giulietta Simionato sings the extremely difficult role of Azucena with such ease, that it sounds unreal, bordering on technical ... Read More

In 1958, when I first started to appreciate opera at just age 14+, I was in Dallas for a family visit. Callas was singing with the Dallas Civic Opera and stayed at the Adolphus Hotel. With gumption that only a youth can have, I went to her hotel room and sought her autograph. She was not there but her maid asured me that I would get the autograph, and on a photo no less, to be left at the front desk. I did get the autograph, but just never really came to fully appreciate the Callas voice. Yes, I have a number of her recordings, but still..... others were my favorites.Having collected over 1,000 different operas on recordings and some of them on dozens of LPs, tapes and CDs, I believe I have become an authority, but still learning and hearing, on recorded classical music. Now, some 50 years later, I have come to ... Read More

Even the Gramophone, usually on Tebaldi's side no matter what, found her a bit stately and overpowering as the fragile Mimi, and the aged Serafin's conducting earned adjectives like "indulgent," and "a touch arthritic." None of these reservations are reflected in the five-star brigade at Amazon, where runaway enthusiasm trumps criticism. At the current super-bargain price from Amazon Marketplace, no one will be out of pocket trying this 1959 remake of Tebaldi's 1950 mono account under Erede -- Decca has both in print.

Listening to the two side by side, I was struck by how natural and unforced the young Tebaldi was in her vocal acting. On that account, her early Mimi combines dramatic credibility with voluptuous vocalism. By 1959 there wasn't much acting left beyond the generic: we are hearing a world-famous ... Read More

OperaD'Oro has issued a number of artistically excellent performances, however the technical quality is sometimes not up to today's standards. These (this CD is the first in a series of which there are currently 4 CDs) collections of excerts are of excellent technical and artistic quality. At the price, it is a real bargain.

Wow! Vickers is amazing. I have never heard this role sung so masculine. Vickers is huge and so lithe. He is like Bergonzi on steroids... And the guy who said the sound is awful obviously doesn't listen to pirated recordings. This is perfectly acceptable 60's pirate sound. The rest of the cast is good but Vickers is Exceptional... I've never heard a Gustavo like him. Magnificent.

Wow! What a voice! This 2 CD set features 40 of Carlo Bergonzi's works. It represents a remarkable portrait of his body of work. The "liner notes" observe that he had a reputation "as a singer of rare refinement, exemplary style, and impeccable taste. . . ."

Some examples of his work:

"Che gelida manina": This exquisite work from Puccini's "La Boheme" is superbly sung. There is, to be sure, an occasional affectation, but his rich, smooth voice renders this a trifling concern. Listen to the power and richness of his voice on such words as "millionaria," "forziere," and "la speranza" (hope I came close to spelling the words right!). What a lustrous voice. . . .

"O soave fanciulla": This duet with Renata Tebaldi (talk about a "dream duo") is exquisite. Bergonzi's rendition of the powerful opening produces ... Read More
