The selections chosen are, for the most part, to my taste, but the volume is comprised of fewer supurb selections, such as those masterpieces by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart that were found in Vol. I.

The Florida Suite is one of the little known treasures of the orchestral repertoire. It is my favorite piece by Delius. It was published posthumously by Sir Thomas Beecham, whose Seraphim LP of the work was my first acquaintance with it. That was a glorious performance. I have CDs of the work by William Boughton, Sir Charles Mackerras, and the present one by David Lloyd-Jones. Lloyd-Jones is an excellent Delius conductor--there is another Naxos CD of him conducting popular works by the composer--and this performance is almost as good as Beecham's. It is lovingly played, and the excellent, full bodied digital sound adds immeasurably to one's Delian experience, especially as the piece is so lush and colorful. The shorter works on this CD, like the Florida Suite, come from early in Delius's ... Read More

Bryn Terfel has a one-in-a-million voice. Lovely singing. Fine song selection. Maybe a tad too dramatic, but my real complaint centers on the excessive dynamic range between soft passages and loud. It's just too much. One moment, you're turning up the stereo to hear him sing a soft passage, the next he's blasting you out of your car or house. This happens several times per song. Volume compression could smooth out the highs and lows a bit, but purists would no doubt cry foul. In short, make sure your neighbors love Terfel as much as you do!

Same comments as I made with the other CD "Last night of the Proms". This CD isn't as good and I guess I didn't read the preview too closely as this is only 'music of the last night of the proms' and NOT the actual Royal Albert Hall last night. Disappointing in that respect.
Should have gone for the more expensive CD with the BBC etc because of the crowd participation and the Conductor's final address, the singing and
chanting of the audience.

Volume 2 of the Naxos English String Miniatures carries on the fine work done by Shaw and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta in the first volume. The works in volume 2 are not nearly as well known, but they hold up quite well in comparison, especially in the expert hands of David Lloyd-Jones and the English Northern Philharmonic. My only beef is that the printed track order, and the electronic listing that downloads to media players is wrong. Ireland's Holy Boy is actually track 7, not 13. This displaces the remaining tracks up by one.

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

As a music educator, I've found the recorded excerpts to be wonderfully and logically organized and presented. I've always been an instrumental music teacher only, but find myself teaching general music classes this year, and absolutely love what I've used so far. The last disc alone shows the fascinating evolution of the modern orchestra. Every other track is narrative text, the script of which is printed in the booklet, and I present that info myself, modifying as needed and answering questions during that time. I've only skimmed the other information from the booklet on my own, and look forward to reading and learning more! I'll be buying another copy of Instruments of the Orchestra for my school to own in the near future.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was a close friend of Ralph Vaughan Williams, and he considered "Job" to be RVW's masterpiece.

Any music student or aspiring composer would profit by studying the score of Job. Not only is it a fine piece of music, but it contains every possible orchestral effect. (Just don't go nuts with the tuba part like Ralph did.) Unfortunately it's an extremely difficult piece requiring a huge ensemble, and thus it's seldom performed.

I own 4 different recordings of Job, and this one is as good as any of them. I also own a copy of the score (can you tell that I admire the piece?), and if you purchase this CD, drop me a line and I'll send you a PDF copy of the stage directions from the score with the corresponding timings of the CD, so you can see what the music is supposed to represent. ...
