Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.

We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!

It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

While there may be no perfect "Messiah" recording out there, this is STILL one of the very finest, and I've owned it since its original release & still return to it regulary. Emma Kirkby's solos alone make this One of the top Three to Five choices out there among hundreds of versions available. This is one of the Original attempts to produce an more "historically accurate" version, by using a choir of Men and boychoir, rather than the more commonly used mixed choir of males & females. And surely the Christ Church Choir of Oxford delivers a serene, rich, pure tone, which is very "transparent" in the four vocal parts Handel wrote for the chorus, balanced by the clear & equally transparent Academy of Ancient Music Orchestra. Some often dismiss this "style" of performance as a bit dry, ... Read More

Undoubtedly the best Hildegard recording I've ever heard. I have other Hildegard discs that get played once, but this has been my constant companion for 13 or 14 years. The best yet.

This is a very nice Magnificat, plus the Jauchzetg Gott in allen Landen cantata BWV 51, but it suffers, by today's standards, for being no more than 2/3 the length of modern CD value. The four stars, and no more are especially fair, in that there is an excellent Magnificat recording on Chandos, directed by Richard Hickox, with Emma Kirkby and John Mark Ainsley no less, joined with Vivaldi's Gloria RV 589 and Ostro picta, armata spina RV 642, weighing in at 64 minutes, with three stars from the Penguin guide. Go there for your Magnificat.

Pergolesi - Stabat Mater · Salve Regina / Kirkby · Bowman · AAM · Hogwood is simply put it a sublime recording. Being a devout person at heart this is heartwrenching to listen to and one can feel the intense pain as one listens to this wonderful piece. Emma Kirky is truly a treat to listen to and James Bowman is also quite competent. The book-let is a bit sparse but has a very nice painting on the front, a very well written essay Francesco Degrada (translated DECCA 1989 by Avril Bardoni), and the text for these magnificient works in english, latin, german and french and has also a very nice photograph in on page 4 of Emma Kirkby, James Bowman and Christopher Hogwood. I can not say enough good things about this splendid recording and I give it 5 stars.

Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as pure and gracious ... Read More

I'll throw my hat into the ring with Frank & ClassicalFan, you must read their reviews. I won't rehash these excellent commentaries, however, I would add that so many compilations of baroque music are clich'e, but not here. The musical selection was masterfully done. Not only will you hear some uncommon Baroque gems, you will become engulfed in their contemplitive reflection. This music is true salve for the soul!

this is a lovely performance with a boy choir singing the soprano part, giving a very light top end to the music.

10.Mozart: Exsultate Jubilate; Motets by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music, Westminster Cathedral Boys Choir

Music : Mozart: Exsultate Jubilate; Motets
Even the Emperor's Nightingale never sang more sweetly than Emma Kirkby in 1984, in her vocal prime, when she recorded these resounding anthems of joy. Listeners unfamiliar with "historically informed" performances like this one may wonder why Emma sounds different from other sopranos they have heard. What such a listener might notice first is the absence of sustained vibrato. Singers of the early 20th Century were taught that a constant vibrato was basic to a beautiful tone. Such was not the case in Mozart's time or before. The glorious vibrato of an aspiring diva is exactly what many people find comical and unnatural in classical music, and they have a point. Vibrato exaggerates the mannerism of highly-trained singing. Kirby has a secure control of vibrato, which she uses not as a buffer for tuning but as an ornament ... Read More
