Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.

We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!

It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

Richard Souther's electronic, sometimes techno arrangement/accompaniment of Hildegard's pure and intense melodies is an experiment that works well for certain pieces (Virga ac Diadema, O Frondens Virga, O Euchari in Leta Via) but fails for others.

In any case the voice and performance of Emily Van Evera is very uplifting, even if the final product is not exactly what she was expecting.

Undoubtedly the best Hildegard recording I've ever heard. I have other Hildegard discs that get played once, but this has been my constant companion for 13 or 14 years. The best yet.

Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as pure and gracious ... Read More

These cd's are a great set of varied classical music. Pavane is my favorite. Additionally, Classical Chillout 2 offers theme music from Harry Potter and it is very well done.

Music : Bach: Mass in B minor
No performance of Bach's B minor Mass could ever be totally dull, but the recording by Harry Christophers and the Sixteen, which is included in the Brilliant Classics Complete Bach Box, comes close. I listened to part of it last night, and decided to search through other versions in my collection to find the best! A foolish idea, of course, but I dug up the original release on vinyl of Parrott's offering, with the divine Emma Kirkby singing soprano. The "shtick" for that performance was the decision to sing everything, choruses included, one on a part. There were outcries of delight and despair at the time. Hearing it again, after some years, I'd say it sounds amazingly vibrant and musical, with the soprano-alto duets surpassing those of any subsequent performance. I like it so well that I'd buying this re-released ... Read More

I bought this album because it had some favorites of mine and what looked to be an interesting composition of titles. It wasn't until I sat down to listen to it, did I fully realize how masterfully it had been put together. Most of the artists on here are well known (Such a Oriff's O Fortuna) with a few completely unheard of artists (to me). The CD's tracks were perfectly organized and each song came in a successive wave compiling into a series of deluges that becomes a great cresendo. Very powerful and very surprising. I am more than pleased and have subscribed myself to looking for more CD's by this company.

The mind boggles when listening to Purcell. Certainly his was a genius that could vie with any great contrapuntist. It is sad that he had to go so early in his life. But then I guess we wouldn't have seen the rise and rise of Handel.

Having said that, this recording is a marvellous one, one of uncommon brilliance I might add. It does not represent a summary of his work and style, even if restricted to just his vocal music, such was the originality and fertility of his invention. But it is revealing of the enormity of his command of music. Why this composer isn't as well-known as Mozart or Bach, or yes even Handel, I will never know.

I assure all that the quality of these recordings is unrivalled. Careful attention is paid to detail, and a first-rate line up of soloists ensures a world-class ... Read More

The success of this recording lies in the unique presentation of these wonderful works of Handel. In being recorded in the context of a Carmelite Vespers liturgy, the music takes on a new tone that would certainly be lacking in any other recording. Without this context, we cannot experience the music as it was intended to be experienced. I say, experience, for, in this recording, the music of Handel ceases to be mere 'kunstmusik', but becomes true, functional, prayer as well.
