Elvis Costello is Evil himself.
*He stole the name from the the Good Elvis
*He can't sing.
*He has not composed one good song.
*He snatched Diana Krall.
*He has totally ruined and vandalised others' good songs:
-"Good year for the roses" by George Jones
-"On your way down" by Little Feat/Allen Toussaint
-"London Calling" by the Clash.

I'm not an Elvis fan who loves everything he does. Once again, however, he's collaborated with the right people and come up with something that's as excellent as anything he's ever produced. The songs and the performances are great. If you still have a turntable, or if you've just bought one (it happens), I highly recommend the vinyl version. You'll enjoy the high-quality fidelity and the ineffable feel of capturing this music in the right medium. If you're completely unfamiliar with Elvis Costello's music, I would recommend this record anyway. It's modern and classic at the same time; it's just a great record.

Great movie, great soundtrack. For the record, Townes Van Zandt both wrote and performs Dead Flowers. Sir Mick, the Glimmer Twins, The Rolling Stones, whateveryouwanttocallthemtoday recorded Townes's song and made it famous. Luckily, the Coen Bros know the original is the best. Too bad that who ever posted this text originally didn't know the difference.

Back in 1977, it must have taken exactly 1:23 min to realize that Elvis Costello was a serious case and would be around for a long time.
Welcome To The Working Week bursts in with so much nerve and confidence that you want to go back to check it again. But Miracle Man is equally as good. As most of this album is. This geeky Liverpudlian with Buddy Holly glasses delivers american rock and roll with punk attitude and a lot more chords than you would expect. Fast and angry but clever. The backing band is competent but it's Costello's sneering vocals and song-writing skills that make the difference. Costello sounds like an urban Springsteen - the same passion without the good-heart.

My Aim Is True is still one of Costello's best albums, but as someone wrote "the best was yet to come". ... Read More

At the time of its release I liked a few songs but didn`t appreciate this album as a whole. Bought it recently because of the few good tunes I remember liking only to be surprised at how good the other tunes are. This relates especially to what used to be B-side material when records were the music media; notable tracks being Sunday`s Best and Two Little Hitlers.

I recently read that Costello listened a great deal to ABBA shortly before recording this album. This is evident in the fluency of the songs, many very catchy tunes that is maybe disguised by the more organic production style. The style of singing by Costello is marvelous, a very descriptive way of expressing the words as in "...add to your collection" in the brilliant Accidents Will Happen. The texts are, by the way, well worth going through ... Read More

The album is flawless. The musicianship is so tight and economical that not a single note or beat seems out of place (every person I've ever known is thrilled to hear 'Pump it Up'). While obviously one would not cast EC in "I Pagliacci" his vocal tones and inflections are perfect for his material, perhaps never more so than on this record.

But what makes listening to this so breathtaking is the songwriting. This, along with 'Armed Forces' form the most brilliant collection of compositions in the history of popular music. The genre that once relied on "one-two-three'o'clock, four'o'clock rock" and "tutti-fruitti aw rooty" now had Declan the Great to provide "you want to throw me away, but I'm not broken" and "I want to bite the hand that feeds me".

Forget trying to pigeonhole this by saying it was ... Read More

With a reputation so rooted in the turtle-necked, nicotine-infused lounge lizardry of Hal David, Dionne Warwick and the zero consequence hedonism of Southern California affluence - the prospect of a Burt Bacharach tag-team with the much rougher and far more tumbled Elvis Costello would have seemed to be an Irwin Allen disaster in waiting - a wildly ironic vanity project with all the nervous energy and awkward body language of an arranged marriage.

Well, a strange thing happened on the way to that opposites don't attract scenario - Bacharach and Costello made a remarkable record that after a decade of repeated listening has only become more vibrant and powerful. The vastly different approach of both artists makes little difference - whether it is the caramelized melodies of Mr. Bacharach or the sly, vindictiveness of Costello's ... Read More

42 tracks includes most of EC's greatest songs. If you do not own any EC cds start with this one. The old stuff is better but someone this prolific may still produce some gems, this double cd gives you a standard with which to measure the new stuff. Mr Costello has a very tough act to follow.

Way to go, Tim, I totally felt this sentiment and was glad to hear it from someone else! --folks, this one is really the epitome of what Elvis had done and what he was to become: It's sentiments, it's energy, it's directness, it's homage to musics past both echoes Costello's past and boldly introduces us to what he would do in the future TO music, and FOR music. It's very uplifting to hear, regardless if you've heard anything else by him, and that speaks VOLUMES for any artist.
I advise you all to own this record, it's TOP 10-Alltime-worthy to be sure!

This Year's Model is arguably Costellos' best album. Compared to his debut, lets say that what was good in My Aim Is True is now even better and what didn't work is simply left out.
So Elvis changed his American studio-backup band for the British Attractions and the band sound got more distinctive and doubled its fierceness and aggressiveness. And completely fat-free - things like the slide guitar that appeared on Waiting For The End Of The World have no place in this new framework. And most importantly, his song writing skills have refined resulting in 13 extraordinary songs. Of these only Little Triggers (a ballad) would fit better among the rootsy sound of My Aim Is True. In fact the albums are not that different - it's almost as Elvis gave himself a second start, this time doing it 100% right (notice that both albums kick off using the same ... Read More
