When you compare Freni with the light roles that she used to sing in the 60s and this Freni, you will think they are two different singers. But what is truly amazed is the fact that not only her voice changed, but she became bar none to one the hardest heavy lyric soprano roles ever: Mimi. And when she has Pavarotti next to her, it is like heaven. But, wait... Who is conducting is Karajan, unarguably one of the best puccinian ever. This is a record to listen, re-listen, re-listen, re-listen until I don't know when...

you don't have to be an opera lover to love this album. Pavarotti 's golden voice is at its best in this recording of Puccini's wonderful opera.
I listen to this CD constantly and never tire of it. If you are hoping to convert someone to an opera fan, this is the recording to do it.

This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, is a master stroke of pure choral music. The piece is repetitive but Allegri builds up to a fantastic ending. Also of note is the glorious recording of Mozart's AVE VERUM CORPUS, Hadyn's DIE SCHOPFUNG, and Brahm's EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM. A MUST for any choral music fan.

If you want to get a complete opera, this CD isn't for you, but it is an excellent compilation of different opera arias from various composers, most of which are Italian. Some highlights are "Vient, Diletto" and "Ah Mes Amis".

I absolutely love opera music, and this c.d. is great for the most part. However, I am completely shocked that Maria Callas is nowhere to be found! In my opinion Callas' versions of Vissi D'arte, Vissi D'amore, L'Amour Est Un Oiseau Rebelle, Oh! MI Babbino Caro, Signore, Ascolta!, and Un bel di vedremo were much better than the versions feature on this c.d. Even Tribaldi made the list! If people enjoy amazing opera music, they would be better off buying a c.d. by Maria Callas. Of course, Pavarotti is also amazing.

Yes, this is a lovely recording. Pavarotti and Freni are worth the money alone. The orchestra sound amazing, and the Decca-boys created a sound-world like only they could. BUT: von Karajan, as very often, ruins the theatre of the piece with very self-indulgent tempi. He simply loves the sound he makes too much. And the supporting cast: I'm sorry, but Harwood sounds very tight and decidedly unsexy as Musetta, and Panerai, with his tight, goaty vibrato barks a lot. Having said all that, the only other Boheme I ever listen to is Björling and De Los Angeles. A shame, though, that "von I Love Myself" spoiled the party. PS: The cover, is the original, from the LP-issue from way back when. Just so you know.

This review details the performances more than the content of the operas. Another reviewer speaks more about the different operas themselves, and I agree with what he says for the most part, particularly concerning Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yeomen of the Guard. The Sorcerer is also very rewarding if given time. The duet "Welcome joy, adieu to sadness" and the quintet "I rejoice that it's decided" are singularly enjoyable.

Seeing that this is a 24CD Boxed Set, there wasn't really any way for me to say everything that needed saying in any short space. So, I've divided the review into a number of sections. They are as follows:

1. The top few recordings that generally win over competition
2. The particular weaknesses of the recordings
3. The particular strengths ... Read More

This compilation is a great introduction to puccini's music, It has all of puccini's most popular numbers and
the singers are some of the greatest opera stars of the
20th century. Just look at the names: Pavarotti, te kanawa Freni, caballe, Tebaldi,Corelli, Sutherland ,bergonzi,ludwig...
Leona mitchel isn't as famous as the rest but she sings her two arias beautifully.
Pavarotti's "nessun dorma" is the best!
highly recommended for opera lovers.
