I ordered the recording and the score to see if I could break the code. Besides identifying each variation with one of Elgar's friends, is there something in the main motif itself? Like the digits of pi? Has anyone found the pattern?

Though Barbirolli had a long association with Elgar (as Michael Kennedy remarks in his remarkably informative liner notes, he made no less than 6 recordings of Introduction & Allegro, including the first one in 1927 with an ensemble he had hired himself), it is for the conductor's take on Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy (his second recording) that I bought this disc. It is, indeed, superb. The most remarkable feature of Barbirolli's conducting, I find (and this applies to many of his other recordings as well), is the weight he invests the music with. Close to the Tallis Fantasy's beginning the lower strings are instructed to play an eighth-notes bass accompaniment in pizzicati. It is marked "molto pesante". I've never heard it more pesante than with Barbirolli. It is Atlas walking with the weight ... Read More

I bought the CD to replace the vinyl and am glad I did. At the end of the day, I just really want to marry a lighthouse keeper and keep him company. "Won't that be okay?"

Beautifully done, arranged, and selected. All are very good performances, and there are many lesser known but wonderful pieces such as the movement from Shostakovich's second piano concerto.

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

What can be said about the most beautiful and exciting cellist playing the most beautiful music selection perfectly recorded.
I laughed, I cried and above all I wished she was around today.
The angels turned in their harps for cellos.

All good. Elgar the way it should be played- plenty of emotion. Late romanticism should be played from the heart- almost to the extreme of 'haming it up'. The tears will roll, the joy of laughter is obvious- its fantastic. I wish today's performers were brave enough to let their hair down sufficiently when playing music from this era.
