Willi Boskovsky was born and trained in Vienna. Both Boskovsky and the great Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra -- of which he served as as concertmaster for forty years -- thoroughly assimilated the essence of the delightful Viennese waltzes and other music presented on these CDs. This is beautiful music superbly conducted and played by people who understand and love it. All of the favorites and many delightful lesser-known works by the Waltz King Johann Strauss II, his father Johann Strauss I, and his brothers Josef and Eduard are included in this set of six CDs. Very highly recommended.

Having seen the New Years Day concerts on PBS for the last twenty-five years I could never make up my mind as to which one to get on video or laser disc as they became available. So many great conducters with so many great performances how can you choose just one. When I discovered this compilation, I knew immediatly that this was the one for me. There are so many great conductors with so many great performances and the folks at Deutsche Grammophon have done a wonderful job at preserving them. It is impossible to choose just one of the waltzes as a favorite. They're all so beautifully done. If like me you could never make up your mine as to which recording to get, this compilation will be all that you need.

I did not expect to like this CD; I bought it because I have enjoyed other Barbara Bonney CDs (especially her Mendelssohn lieder) and was able to get it very cheaply. Boy was I wrong. What a delightful CD! There is nothing serious about the music but it is charming and a welcome change from more serious fare. Barbara Bonney's singing is lovely and strikes the right note of effervescence without becoming schmaltzy and annoying. This CD is a very pleasant way to spend time.

Ein Straussfest Volume I has become one of my favorites through the years. The playing is exuberant, the sound effects wonderful and the overall sound quality of this recording is the best of any I have ever heard! I have some great "direct to disk" Sheffield vinyl from the late 70's and I remember many audiophiles claiming the superiority of the old technology. This album, I believe, proves them wrong. This album is a rare combination of musicianship and technology and a spectacular demonstration disk! I eagerly looked forward to the release of volume II, and unfortunately was greatly disappointed. The sound, by Telarc standards, is miserable and the performances are uninspired, in my opinion. Buy and treasure volume I, forget volume II.
