I don't think that I like this live Dream Theater album better than "Live at Budokon" but the set list is awsome. These are some of my favorite D.T. songs. Of course, this being a Dream Theater album, the sound quality and musicianship are phenomenal.

I think that this would be a good place to start for a non-fan. The set list is excellent and contains a very diverse collection of music from D.T.'s entire career - including five tracks from thier latest (and best?) studio album. Also, my two favorite D.T. songs are included in this album: "The Ministry of Lost Souls", and "In The Name of God".

The only negative things that I can say about this album it that "Blind Faith" sounded a little weird, and that the album is a compilation of shows rather than one concert. ... Read More

For some odd reason, I had 'Octavarium' for two years before I even bothered to listen to the title track. I often find it difficult to get into the more Yes/King Crimson/Floyd-ish 70s-style prog-rock so I figured I wouldn't enjoy it too much, and....well, lemme cover the rest of the album first. The whole disc revolves around the theme of numbers (particularly 8 and 3) and various other themes (terrorism in 'Sacrificed Sons', ungrateful people in 'Never Enough', and a return to Portnoy's AA saga in the killer 'The Root of All Evil'). All of them are brought together in the mammoth title track at the end.

1. The Root of All Evil 9/10 (solid crunching heavy opener which brings in old motifs from 'This Dying Soul' since this is the 3rd part of the AA saga; heavy riffs, great melodies, and great ... Read More

Purchased this CD about a year ago due to all the great reviews posted on Amazon. I have three Dream Theater CD's, Metropolis Part II, Train of Thought and Change of Seasons. Train of Thought is really good and Metropolis Part II is one of my favorite CD's.

Listened for a few times when I received, and I wasn't very impressed. Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon and Another Day have their moments, but overall just wasn't much to grab my attention.

Recently decided to give it another listen to see if I just put it to the side too quickly. Sometimes it just take more listens for an album to grow on you. After five or six more listens, sad to say I still don't care for this very much.

Oh the guys can really play their instruments, but most of the songs just really fall flat. ... Read More

I'm a very big fan of dream theater and this compilation was very very good, although i wanted a few songs instead of others but it's pretty cool how they remastered songs.

Having been a casual Rush fan since 1980 or so, I thought that I would give this group a try and generally liked what I heard. In fact, I was surprised that I liked Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) as much as I did - I am far removed from being a heavy metal fan and prefer the "artier" sound of progressive rock. The overall sound on this album nods in the direction of Rush, Styx, Metallica, and Queensryche, yet sounds very contemporary. Above all else however, it is played at a breakneck tempo and with a sophistication that I have not heard in heavy metal since listening to my old Rush records. Indeed, this is a fine example of progressive metal.

The lineup on this album includes three former Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts) students: John Petrucci (electric and acoustic guitars); ... Read More

I fail to see how anyone can say images and words is better than this album. I love the original DT as much as the next fan, but I actually feel everything after Awake almost outdoes anythign previous, especially this album and Scenes From a Memory. I'm not absolutelly in love with the 2nd concept cd in this set, but it has its moments. That said, the first cd with five nice, long DT style prog tracks is surelly some of the best in their catalogue. I honestly don't know why everyone wants to compare all their later cd's to Images and Words and Awake...those two albums just don't compare at all.

I don't like writing a huge review about every track or anything to that degree, so all I will say is that, if you loved the Scenes... album, you will love this as well. This album quite possibly had the best production of any ... Read More

I can't believe that I have ever seen a rant about prog rock, instead of a review for CD before. Who the heck is this Adem dude anyway? "Rock is supposed to be mindless". Well that is nice to know, now that I have listened to decades of great music with great lyrics by many, many bands that so many other people think are wonderful.

By the way, this is an excellent recording. Don't always pay attention to all of the reviews by the Amazon personnel!

As a total Dream Theater fanatic who has seen the band five times in concert (including the 20th anniversary at radio city), as well as a musician myself - I must say that this is my favorite D.T. studio album so far.

For me, the high-point of the Disk is "The Ministry Of Lost Souls". It is a true masterpiece and an amazingly moving and beautiful song. Another one of my favorites is the two-part epic "In the Presence of Enemies". It is a typical, straight-up Dream Theater type song with great guitar playing and beautiful melodies.

This Album has somthing for everyone: a ballad, old-school metal, pop, Nu-metal (Forsaken) and your typical dramatic, complex progressive rock.

There is somthing else that I love about Dream Theater - besides the music itself. It is the fact that if you are a D.T. fan, your ... Read More

The Train of Thought Tour was arguably the strongest of DT's career. These songs really shine and can cave in the roof of a stadium. This is where the crowd can tear up the floor and rave. And James can RAP. Ridiculously powerful. Train of Thought RULES!!!

I just don't get Dream Theater. This is not very good songwriting if you ask me. Compared to any progressive rock band from the 70's, these guys can't compete with ANY of them. Putting Dream Theater in the same category as Yes, Genesis, Rush, or heck, even Kansas and Uriah Heep, is pretty laughable.

Occasionally some guitar tricks will catch my attention, but the vocal melodies leave me scratching my head and asking "What's so great about this?" I *really* want to know if people who are fans of Dream Theater ever seriously listened to artists like King Crimson, Yes, and early Genesis. Because THOSE are genius bands capable of memorable songwriting skills.

Track one on this album, which is 20 minutes long, is pretty boring. Some nice guitar tricks aside, and everything else is rather ordinary, and features a lead singer ... Read More
