Nabucodonosor (Nabucco) is a hugely attractive role for dramatic baritones such as Tito Gobbi;the entire role is wionderfully emotive, not least his Mad Scene and a wonderful duet with Abigaille. Gobbi was still in good voice in 1965 - he is even better here that in his second Tosca recording with Callas - his portrayal oozes with class and his use of Italian is inspired.
Abigaille is sung by Elena Souliotis. I disagree with Joe McLellan's review over Souliotis' portrayal. 1) That she is "burned-out" - although I would agree with this description for Souliotis later in her career for she did ruin her voice early on - I would emphatically not say that about this recording - her finest moment in the studio in my opinion, and certainly in her 'prime'. 2) That she was imitating Callas ... Wow! What a voice! This 2 CD set features 40 of Carlo Bergonzi's works. It represents a remarkable portrait of his body of work. The "liner notes" observe that he had a reputation "as a singer of rare refinement, exemplary style, and impeccable taste. . . ."

Some examples of his work:

"Che gelida manina": This exquisite work from Puccini's "La Boheme" is superbly sung. There is, to be sure, an occasional affectation, but his rich, smooth voice renders this a trifling concern. Listen to the power and richness of his voice on such words as "millionaria," "forziere," and "la speranza" (hope I came close to spelling the words right!). What a lustrous voice. . . .

"O soave fanciulla": This duet with Renata Tebaldi (talk about a "dream duo") is exquisite. ... Read More

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Puccini: Il Trittico
Il Trittico is not generally regarded as Puccini's greatest work.
Tebaldi is not in top form, though her singing is sufficiently dramatic. The sound quality is not excellent, although it is good. Overall, it's a fine choice if you want a recording of this work, but I wouldn't call it a "must" for any collection except major Puccini or Tebaldi fans.

5.Verdi: La Traviata from: Decca Import

Music : Verdi: La Traviata
Just the most beautiful Traviata I ever heard. Great to get as a refreshingly different interpretation of this over recorded work.

Bergonzi and Sutherland at their prime-what more could you want. And as for those who complain about Pritchard's conducting being so slow-it works great with these singers.

one last thing-the price! best bargain you can get for an opera cd

2 CDs, 30 pieces, many sopranos. For people like me, who love the soprano voice, this is, as we used to say in the Midwest, "Hog heaven." Sopranos involved include major names from the past five decades--Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Regine Crespin, Mirella Freni, Beverly Sills, June Anderson, Kathleen Battle, Montserrat Caballe, Renee Fleming, Ileana Cotrubas, Edita Gruberova, Lucia Popp, and still others.

This is so rich a product that I think that the best way of proceeding is to examine illustrative works, rather than try to catalog all the pieces. Overall, this is a fun piece. One can certainly ask why some were included and others excluded. One can also question why particular sopranos with specific pieces. But that's part of the fun, in fact, in collections like this. It gets ... Read More

I admit to getting excited when I saw this; the cast is a dream, headed by that peerless Straussian soprano, Gundula Janowitz. But when the set actually arrived, I was immediately disappointed by the muddy, fuzzy sound and the lack of higher frequencies. However, on further listening using headphones I came to appreciate the beauty of the singing despite the sonic limitations of the live recording. Pretre confirms his reputation as an efficient, matter-of-fact conductor; there is little affection for the ebb and flow of that glorious music and he rushes much of the score. Yes, you can still hear those wonderful voices: Janowitz's creamy, soaring soprano; Cotrubas's plangent, girlish tones; Fassbender's clear, boyish Octavian; Ridderbusch's rotund, focussed Ochs, Luchetti's virile Italian singer - they're all as good as I had hoped, but that makes it ... Music : Cherubini: Medea
As others have pointed out, this is a fine supplement (or alternative) to Callas, and in far better sound than any of the Callas recordings -- even her studio set made for Ricordi and reissued on EMI.

There's little subtlety in Dame Gwyneth's take on the title role. She basically blasts her way through the part with a big, gleaming voice that, at this early stage in her career, was still under her complete control. Her approach may not be sophisticated, but it certainly is exciting. I return to this recording again and again, and always with pleasure.

The rest of the cast provide adequate support. But, face it, this opera really is a one-woman show. Glauce is a cipher with an aria, which Pilar Loregar sings well. Other than his first act aria, Giasone exists only to have two confrontations with his abandoned lover. No ... Read More
