Horrible, horrible recording. Yo Yo Ma, as usual, gives a great performance. The sound engineer, Richard King, should be run out of his profession. The recording is muddled, piano and other instruments are too loud, and even the sound of the cello is occasionally distorted. You can hear Ma breathing and other distracting sounds during the course of certain songs.

It is difficult to put into words how much I enjoy this music. While I realized that this had been recorded in the 50's and I was prepared for some background noise, what I received instead was a kind of majesty and purpose that is difficult to find today in an orchestra or its conductor. There is no doubt about the glorious interpretation of this music and the orchestra is likewise single minded.
I freely admit that I purchased this CD realizing that my only copy on digital vinyl left me tied to my listening room at home. I also freely admit that I purchased this with the intent on revenge against the Mustangs playing what passes for music these days, a cacophony of filthy lyrics and vulgar pounding. I have to say that the result is both worthwhile and pleasurable, watching people ... Read More

I love this record. I've always loved "Pictures" but never owned a copy. When I found it was available on SACD, I had to get it since it's the best consumer distribution format I've ever heard. The recording was great in its day and still holds well over many more "technologically advanced" recordings. Really, the most of the best classical recordings are done with 2 or 3 microphones and a stereo or 3-track tape recorder. My one peve with this album is that they used some pretty heavy digital noise reduction which saps some of the life out of the string section. The horns are still clean and clear though and the percussion is as it should be. The recording really didn't need much (if any) noise reduction really as it was so clean in the first place but for some reason the engineers felt obligated ... Read More

This is the only Khachaturian I know and this was the album cover I used to stare at when I was 7 and sit on the sofa and listen to the "Masquerade Suite". I could never find it and assumed it was out of print so about 10 years ago, I bought a low budget Naxos version and it worked but didn't quite satisfy. Although still beautiful, it lacked the sweetness. The recording was good though and I just resigned myself to it.

So today I went to review it thinking few people know of Khachaturian. And as I search for it to review, I suddenly see this CD with the very same album cover I used to stare at, reissued! I'm almost in tears of joy! I'm telling you people, The "Masquerade Suite" is just as beautiful as any. The first movement starts off with a loud and lively march. The slow movement "Nocturne" ... Dmitri Kabalevsky has been considered a Soviet composer whose music was written with one eye over his shoulder to stay in the good graces of the Communist party; hence his music was a compromise to the taste of party officials and devoid of the irony that is typical of Shostakovish's music. However, this assessment is not atypical of his music. The second movement of Kabelevsky's Second Piano Concerto, for example, is a finely wrought funeral march and his music exhibits the influence of Rachmaninov, Ravel and Prokofiev. Kabalevsky was also among the composers named in the 1948 decree that denounced Western influence in Soviet music.

This CD includes some of Kabalevsky's most popular music. It begins with the Overture to Colas Breugnon, an opera based on a novel by Romain Rolland. The story of the opera revolves ... Read More

After experiencing a workshop with John Feierabend, I was planning to purchase this for my classroom. It was great to find it at Amazon. The DVD/CD helps children experience classical music in a new way and keeps them focused and involved in the listening process.

I have the earlier records that Kathryn Stott made of Kabalevsky's second and third piano concertos, and here she completes the cycle with the first and fourth concertos. The First Piano Concerto was first performed in 1931 and is a romantic work following in the line of Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky with a dash of Prokifiev's sarcasm thrown in. The music is lyrical and quietly reflective and at just over 30 minutes Kabalevsky's longest concerto. The center movement is a theme with 5 variations and a coda that sounds as if a folk melody might have been the inspiration. Of the variations, my favorite is probably the fourth with its sparkling melody for the piano. The piano has quite a range of expression that Ms. Stott plays beautifully. I have a liking for this concerto and have the recording by In-Ju Bang that also ... Read More

The sound quality of this instrument surpasses all instruments worldwide. You can hear a pin drop extremely clearly in the tabernacle the instrument is housed, making the pipe organ a highly effective sound producer. The larger 32' pipes sound just like thunderous power. A must buy for organists and organ enthusiasts.

Music : More George Wright At The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Volume 3
If you enjoy the sounds that the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ can produce - you'll enjoy this album. George Wright is probably the best ever at mastering the multiple banks of keys and pedals of this complex instrument, and the music is very relaxing and entertaining. The sounds he coaxes out of the Wurlitzer on "Quiet Village" are remarkable. Easily one of his best - excellent on either a small office stereo, or played on a home theater system.
