I've been trying to get some more variety in my music library lately. Being from Washington, I've heard these guys on the radio a lot, so I figured I'd give them a real chance and picked up Narrow Stairs.

My jaw was on the floor the first four songs, and for a few more after that. How have I let Death Cab get by me up until now? Most of the lyrics are well thought out, and Gibbard does a great job setting up an atmosphere with the music.

I thought I was impressed the first time I listened to this album, but it gets better every time. Since getting this, I've gone out and gotten Plans and Transatlanticism, and I'm about to listen to those. My favorites here though have to be: Bixby Canyon Bridge, I Will Possess Your Heart, Grapevine Fires, and Your New Twin Sized Bed.

**i'm a 32 yr old guy who used to listen to Stone Roses, Lush, Smiths, REM, etc. and i was thinking this might be like some of that stuff.. it wasn't..
**Lightness, title and registration and We Looked Like Giants are the only decent songs on this CD.. and Giants is screwed up at the end with that dumb static thing that they did on it.. Lightness is the best song by far- it gives me chills listening to it.. very very good.. but again, it's a short song so as much as you like it it only last 2 mins..
**I don't know how anyone could give this CD 4 or 5 stars.. it is honestly depressing.. Transatlanticism, the song, has some good points to it but it is overwhelmingly sappy and slow.
This band is loaded i'm sure.. i'd be curious if there earlier stuff wasn't so sappy and slow.. this is ... Read More

They have a folksy sound and they know how to make you want to listen. Very good music. They're not the Beatles, but then who is. It's well worth the money.

I knew that DCFC was an indie rock band that had received a lot of favorable reviews from the critics. I had listened to Transatlanticism and Plans in the past and thought that they were all right but not especially memorable. Even so, I picked up The Photo Album when I saw it in a sale bin. Unlike my previous experiences listening to DCFC, The Photo Album immediately grabbed my attention with its catchy melodies and personal lyrics. Several other reviewers mentioned how the drums are given a very central role in the music, which I liked a lot. I highly recommend this CD and plan to go back and give Transatlantacism and Plans a couple of more listens.

Calm, chill, really funky sound to it, touching songs. I could listen to this album 1000x over from start to finish without getting sick of it. The BEST Death Cab for Cutie album by far, and one of the very few albums in my collection I can listen to from start to finish!

Most of the tracks on this offering are lo-fi and just full of washed-out, Pacific Northwest, dreary-day angst. This sound is distinctive from the brighter, fuller sound on their more recent releases. The last 10 tracks are bonus (compiled from various releases), including a Smiths cover, a glitzy-pop dance song, a sample-heavy track with a hint of hip hop rhythms, and a lovely closer.

I've come to regard this album as one of my favorites. It is an intensely honest, brazenly youthful, at times lonesome, and ultimately accomplished and varied gathering of tracks. A strong sense of time and place (geographical references abound), a personal remoteness balanced with sense of warmth, and a love of city and home run throughout. It takes such a long time to absorb and to get to know the album that ... Read More

Worthwhile introduction into the fragile pop-rock melodies that would drive their early career into teenage hearts all over America. Even with less-then-invigorating production Deathcab thrives when lingering around gently distorted, invitingly aggressive compositions that get to air out, something they contrast well enough with more straight-ahead rockers on their debut.

Great first half, captures Deathcab doing what they do best, much less effortlessly then in recent times. Last few songs die down a bit since the last is just an alternate, which makes this essential for fans, but not everyone, although quite good ep.
