In a watershed moment for Columbia Records, this original Broadway cast recording began the rapid climb of the company into the stratosphere of pop culture consciousness.

Produced by company president Goddard Lieberson, it sold five million copies and spent a staggering 480 weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart. To place the album in an accurate historical perspective, it was the Thriller of its generation.

It is timeless music - due to the rich arrangements & performances - with the numbers encapsulating the musical for those who only have the album as the point of reference.

There are few albums that truly define the American music industry. This is certainly one which has space on that lofty mantel.

It was listening to this CD that made me want to see the show on Broadway. The show I saw had Clay Aiken in it, he did a great job. This recording has David Hyde Pierce as Robin and, of course, he is great, too. The show is hilarious and every time I hear this CD I remember the stage business that accompanied this music. These songs are send-ups of classic Broadway show tunes. I don't know if the album stands on its own if you haven't seen the show. But, if you enjoyed Monty Python's previous CD's you should like this one also. It'll make you want to dance and sing.

Being from a more recent generation, I first read about
"Amahl and the Night Visitors" in an old book music
book by David Ewen, back in 1991, and it was not
until 2008, just last weekend that I got my hands on
a recording of this most magnificent opera. I came across
this particular recording by chance, as I was looking
at a most recent recording, by another label. I saw this
recording of the original telecast as staged by the composer,
and I realize that this recording was closer to the idea
of the composer than any other available. Yes, the sound is
not too great, but that does not matters when the fact
that this is as the composer heard it and staged it, comes to
mind. Thou here the orchestra and chorus are unknown, ... Read More

This recording is not what it says it is. I put it in my computer CD player and the information on my monitor listed the performers as conductor Kent Nagano, tenor Jerry Hadley and others. I listened to the recording and the voice is clearly a tenor. Alan Titus is a baritone and Bernstein wrote the piece for a baritone. How can this be possible? I gave it one star but it deserves no stars.

Pure represents the initial international, read US, CD release of Hayley Westenra. Other albums had been released outside of the US market, but Pure is an excellent cross-section of the wide ranging vocal talent of a sixteen year old New Zealand Popera. This is a must have CD for fans of pitch perfect singers. Her signature piece is Pokarekare Ana. This album has two versions: a basic and extended version. I recommend listening while looking at the CD cover photo. It is amazing to me that such a voice comes out of such a wonderfully talented young woman. If you fall in love with the album and the artist, you will have to have the DVD Hayley Westenra, Live from New Zealand. She is seventeen in it. She takes chances as demonstrated on the cut Wuthering Heights. Hayley has the voice of an angel ... Read More

Was very pleased with the music. Couldn't have been better. I do wish Mr. Beveridge's Maggot was included, tho. Some of the in-film music also could have been included, but overall I enjoyed the CD.

Beautiful it is, perhaps too much so. Too little variety, with one slow carol after another for +70 minutes. I found it stupefyingly boring, and I love Christmas music sung by male voices. Perhaps if listened to a few tracks at a time ...

This is an excellent CD. The music is stirring and mysterious. A blend of classical, rock and folk music. Having watched the Angel tv series, I recognize most of the music and it can bring images of the show to me whenever I choose. I would recommend this CD to anyone who who loved the series.
