After hearing a selection from this CD on NPR, I knew I had to purchase a copy. I bought a copy for myself and also as a gift. David Russell takes his guitar to a place that touches your soul and makes your heart sing along. Even if you are not a fan of classical music you will love this CD.

The Very Best of James Galway

These recordings are pure pleasure to listen to. They contain well known selections, well executed, that deliver a very nice listening experience.

I enjoy Galway's style; these two CDs offer very good value.

I have almost all of David Russel's CDs, and many other CDs of Latin American guitar music. This is my favorite in both categories for about 2 years, now! His rendition of Cardoso's Vals Peruano is amazing. It'll make you sit up and say, "What???? How did he do THAT???". In his hands, Reis' nice little "waltz-y" Se Ela Perguntar becomes a plaintive elegy that'll rip your heart right out of your chest. I played it in this style at my father's funeral and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. This is an amazing CD from, (I think), the best classical guitarist touring today.

(This should be one of the first composers you've ever heard of if you've ever played the classical guitar). This recording is beyond remarkable. The tone and virtuosity is the best you will ever hear along with Russell's other recordings, as well. And David Russell's guitar sound is terrific, intonation is perfect and it projects extremely well. He is very sensitive with this music. Giuliani was a definite genius in his own right although most of his compositions are not as famous as some other guitar composers. His style was somewhat like Sor, pretty straight forward and his progressions never really straight out of key just like most 19th century composers. Giuliani was a virtuoso guitarist and these are virtuoso compositions. Nothing on this recording is harsh and Russell pays attention to ... Read More

I must say I enjoyed pretty much all of the songs on this album. "Victory" by Bond was the only thing they shouldn't have included, since it doesn't quite qualify as "classical" and wasn't what I would call a hit, anyway. True, it was instrumental, but real classical music is of a higher caliber. ("Now We Are Free" isn't quite classical either but it's not 'commercialized' like "Victory.") I really liked "Duel of the Fates," "Maria," "Now We Are Free," and "O Fortuna." Those were my favorites out of a great selection of songs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't really care for full-blown classical.

If you are a Baroque purist, you will probably gag, but this edition of Handel's most famous work points out the strengths and weaknesses of Bernstein the arranger.

Bernstein butchered Handel, rearranging vocal parts and transposing with abandon. He uses the traditional voice types, including a countertenor, but nobody is singing the music Handel intended for that voice type. It can be jarring.

On the plus side, the voices are gorgeous and Bernstein has infused the work with an energy that Handel himself would likely approve. If you know nothing about what the Messiah is supposed to sound like you will find beauty in this rendition. I think it is worthy to be in a classical collection but it should not be the only edition of Messiah one has. As an example of vocal excellence, ... Read More
