Listening to these songs is like getting re-acquainted with an old friend. No one performs acoustic blues any better than David Bromberg, and if you are looking for a primer in finger-picking, this is a good place to start. Bromberg's style is understated but precise. He is not so dazzling as a virtuoso like Leo Kottke but insistent just the same. This is an intelligent mix of songs, including fresh interpretations of some old standards like Dylan's "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry." He goes way down into the country on "Moonshiner," as if the Stanley Brothers were sitting on the couch waiting to take a turn. It is no wonder this album was nominated for a Grammy.

I couldn't agree with Al more about Diamond Lil. It is my favorite DB song of all time. I saw him at(and actually designed the poster for)a concert at the University of Scranton in 1972. He was third billed to Peter Yarrow and headliner Don McLean, but Bromberg stole the show. It was a magical night that will not be forgotten. I love all Bromberg's work and the changes and growth in his music over time, but this album holds a very special place in my heart. Diamond Lil will break yours.

My parents had this album when I was young. I remembered liking it but, with my own growth, my appreciation of the complexity and beauty of the music is now ten fold. The level of musicianship which is shared on this recording is of the highest talent and the quality of this Columbia recording is the highest of any CD I've ever been exposed to. Of course, David Bromberg's voice is a timeless, soothing concotion which, in conjunction with his master instrumentations, he is capable of effortlessly gifting to the listener, a perfect sound and feeling of almost any style of music.

The Volume 1 disc (live set) is a 5 star fabulous compilation. The studio disc is good, not great, with perhaps a bit too much of C&W style and not enough blues.

Bromberg toured to Australia in the late 70s with his full band and it was a delight to see him live - a fantastic show brimming with talent, joy and superb musicianship. This cd is like that - it overflows with genius. Buy it for 'As The Years Go Passing By' alone. Beautiful. I play the latter half more (the 'You Should See The Rest Of The Band' tracks) but that's just a personal preference. It's all good.

One of the best of Bromberg's albums. Bromberg has been around as a studio musician, backup singer/guitarist, and soloist for close to 40 years. For those not familiar with him, this is a great introduction to a self-described old, Jewish, overweight blues singer with extraordinary stage presence, much of which is on display in this CD - especially Bullfrog Blues, one of the great talking blues tracks you will ever hear. His version of "Come into my kitchen" is remarkable; his guitar supplies the lyrics you just imagine. For those who love him but have missed this CD, get it asap. (Wish I could say the same for volumne 2 of this set, which is a studio recording; not nearly as exciting).

The only bad album David Bromberg made doesn't exist. And this album is a prime example. There is so much great music on the album that you can listen to it over and over again. As with many of his albums, there are songs that he has redone from one album and put it on another. The Hold Up is a prime example, same song different quality. Funny, great beats, virtuoso musicianship, and amazing production values are a mainstay on all his albums and Wanted Dead or Alive is no different. It sounds just as good to me today as when I bought the vinyl in 1975. There are very few true musical geniuses out there, and this is a chance to own an album of one.

David Bromberg at his best! I listened to these in the late seventies/early eighties and recently bought the CD's. What a pleasure to listen to them again. Bromberg is by far on of my top 5 favorite artist. Glad he is back.

10.Out of the Blues: Best of David Bromberg by: David Bromberg

Music : Out of the Blues: Best of David Bromberg
David Bromberg is a musical genius. His guitar talent is outdone only by his outrageous sense of humor. This cd is filled with songs that are musically wonderful and sad, funny, true, silly, classic and original. New Lee Highway Blues should be heard by anyone who's ever taken a road trip. This version of Kansas City is a hoot! It's the best I've ever heard. Mr. Bojangles is a tune he played for a long while when he toured with Jerry Jeff Walker, and he talks about that in the middle of the song. If you don't smile at his descriptions of that, you have no sense of humor. What fame David has (he's kind of a cult figure)has him best known for "Sharon", which has incredible chord progressions and interesting lyrics. 'Lectric Chair is as perverse as a popular song can be, yet I find myself singing it ... Read More
