An excellent compilation of early church music performed beautifully by the Taverner Consort, Choir, and Players, and conducted by Andrew Parrott. The recording is clear and the sound well balanced. It is also an exceptional value - 30 tracts (2 1/2 hours of music) on 2 CDs for less that $10.

One of the best recordings of its kind that I have encountered. Truly elegant performances, well-chosen and ordered. I bought it to add a bit of repertoire in teaching (college) Music Appreciation - but it has fast become one of my own personal favorite recordings. JR

Music : Priest on the Run
This wild and fiery CD is very entertaining -- at first. It gets a bit wearing after listening for 20 or more minutes. The virtuosity is exhausting. As a recorder player myself, I respect the incredible power and technical skill of Adams but there seems a bit of soul lacking in his performance. Has this Red Priest sold his soul for unlimited speed on the ventages? In small doses, however, this CD is hard to beat. (Lastly, Vivaldi was the "red-haired priest," not "the red priest.")

The recorder is a superb consort or ensemble instrument, but as a solo instrument can get boring due to its un-complex tone. This problem is accentuated with 17th century sonatas which must be a blast to play, full of complex passages and opportunites to improvise, but which get tiresome on a 60-minute=plus CD.

Patricia Thorby has avoided this pitfall on this CD by a combination of clever programming, and most of all by selecting the Andrew Lawrence-King's harp as the continuo instrument. Its softer tone proves to be a much better accompaniment to the recorder than a harpsichord. She has selected 4 pieces from Der Fluyten Lust-hof, but adds a harp continuo on 3 of these nominally solo works. The presence of a continuo adds a new dimension to these well-known pieces. (Purists should fear not ... Read More

I must disagree almost completely with the previous reviewer. This is one of my favorite 17th-century albums-to a great degree because the sounds of the instruments are so expressive. If I may be permitted to speculate, I think that the reviewer's ear is unused to the characteristic sound of `period' instruments (gut strings and so forth). The sound is undoubtedly grittier, reedier and more insistent than the smooth, homogeneous sound that we associate with more recent music. In fact, the development of modern instruments was driven mainly by the desire to produce a harmonious blend in large orchestral ensembles. But to achieve that sonic homogeneity, instruments such as the violin were profoundly denatured-with a consequent loss of the expressive potential exploited by earlier composers. Far from being an exercise ... Read More
