Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written.

In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed.

Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

Founded by Martin Pearlman in 1973, Boston Baroque is the first permanent Baroque orchestra in the U.S. It is also the resident ensemble for Boston University's Historical Performance Program. Boston Baroque's first Telarc recording, issued in 1992, included the first six concertos of Handel's Opus 6 Handel: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, Nos. 1-6. Fifteen years later Telarc has finally recorded and released the remaining half dozen.

Boston Baroque's recording of the Concerti Grossi Nos. 1-6 was excellent, and Nos. 7-12 are better still. The strings are even more polished (Pearlman doesn't double the string parts with woodwinds, as some other conductors do), and the recorded sound (thanks to DSD) is even more lifelike. Boston Baroque's playing has none of the mannerisms that sometimes ... Read More

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings ... Read More

I agree with all the other reviewers...while the string quartet is strangely beautiful and even haunting in parts, the piano quintet on this disc is huge, passionate, brimming over with such intensity and such wonderful displays of tension and release that i felt emotionally and physically exhausted after listening to it the first time...it is fully the equal or even better than any of the other great romantic piano quintets, including those of Edward Elgar, Louis Vierne, Cesar Franck, and Ernest Bloch (HIS first piano quintet is also amazing!)

Aleck Karis does a wonderful job of interpretation on the two pieces (Solfeggietti & Drawn From Life) he performes on (piano). The string quartet performance is superb as well _ Judith Eissenberg, Rhonda Rider, Lydian String Quartet, Mary Ruth Ray ~ conducted by Daniel Stepner ~ Well worth having in any respectable modern classical collection.
