I haven't enjoyed this one very much. As a matter of fact, I passed it on. Seemed lackluster somehow.

King's Singers Greatest Hits was disappointing. The contemporary music included did not have the smooth feel that one expects, and the classical pieces were all right but not spectacular. I did not feel that some of these pieces were greatest hits. I will probably go back to listening to older collections of their music.

Yes the score for this musical is beautiful. So much going on in each one, perfect for that circus atmosphere. Each instrument has character which is so lost in modern musicals. Now my thing with the lyrics is not that they're bad. They get rather dulled at points, and I just tuned them out. When Jim Dale was singing I listened just to hear him, but otherwise, take them or leave them. It Seems to be show you need to see not hear. Favorite song: "There Is a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute"

Fellini's NOTTE DI CABIRIA adapted into a Broadway show? Almost impossible! Yet, here it is, wonderfully conceived. The music, the lyrics and the interpreters are terrific. Through the music, you really sense it's Fosse material. This digitally remastered edition is technically perfect. If you have the movie soundtrack, get this theatre version as well because it contains songs that did not appear in the film. Destined to become a landmark in the history of the Broadway show.

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

Have you ever heard a song just one time and found it permanently engraved in your memory? Well, for me that song was "Hey look me over". I heard it just one time one a summer night in the early sixties. A local radio station was playing this album with the announcer reading the story line between tracks. The show failed because Lucy's health just couldn't stand up to being on center stage for ninety percent of the show twice a day for six days a week, so I never heard it again. Occasionally I would hear some marching band playing the tune, but I never heard the words sung again for forty years. The remarkable thing was that, from that one hearing, I could remember every word but one. the missing word was from the line that goes; "I'm a little bit short of the elbow room, but let me get me ...., ... Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

Christina Applegate is a totally endearing, multi-faceted performer, but there is no way you can forget Gwen Verdon, or to a lesser degree, Shirley MacLaine in the so-so movie. However, I love revival recordings, if only because they tend to record a more complete score, and they are technically so superior to most of the older originals. On that score, this Sweet Charity doesn't disappoint.
While Applegate is fine, Dennis O'Hare shines as Oscar. The rest of the cast are okay. Nothing more, nothing less. And as Nicki, Janine LaMama can't overcome Bebe Neuwirth in the Debbie Allen revival in the 80's. Allen also suffered the same comparison as Applegate.
One note about the score, one of Coleman's best, the song Too Many Tomorrows is beautifully done here. A gorgeous ballad, I think has been under appreciatted ... Read More

Bea Arthur finally releases her Broadway album, and the highlights are too many to mention. My personal favorites were her memories of Angela Lansbury, Talulah, and the very funny (yet not original) jokes (especially the ones about the nun and the cab driver).

The thing is, Bea has never been much of a songstress or vocalist - she has a deep voice with a very flat quality, which makes even her 'high' notes sound about exactly as the same as her low ones. This may or may not be a good thing, but the focus on the CD is the entire show itself. Bea positions herself as host, singer, stand-up comedian, storyteller, and world observer, and all of these roles meld into one another with remarkable ease.

Whats more important - everything works. I could listen to this back to back. In fact, its the only 'comedy' ... Read More
