The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer speak.

I was delighted with this Dual Disc. Performances are excellent, both audio and video. Recording quality is very good. I must report some problems with CD side (cracks) on older CD player.

I bought this because Joshua Kosman (an SF Chronicle music critic) highly recommended it. As with every Hyperion CD I've bought it is wonderfully done in every detail, even down to the cover art. In his review Mr. Kosman cautioned that this is not profound music, just fun stuff, beautifully played by the Nash Ensemble, and enjoyable to listen to. He is, as usual, 100% correct.

Hearing the music on this CD really brought parts of the story to life for me, and I feel confident that anyone who enjoyed the book will derive pleasure from this disc. Hear the polka with which Corelli impresses Pelagia and the concerto he plays to Dr Iannis (after irritating him by insisting on tapping out the orchestral introduction, played here on the guitar). All of the music is taken from or inpired by the novels of Louis de Bernieres, but it would be wrong to think that this is an album only for literary fanatics - there is a tremendous range of styles, and the listener's attention is held throughout on purely musical grounds. The Berlin Philharmonic can't play mariachi, Mick Jagger can't sing Danny Boy, and David Daniels shouldn't sing Shenandoah.
