I used to have this CD when I was maybe 8 years old. Now I'm 21, and I'm thinking of buying it again, because I have such fond memories of it. As I remember, it's perfect for younger kids (i.e. me) as an introduction to Beethoven's music, and as long as it's not too loud, it's very easy to fall asleep to.

Good peaceful listening music that brings back to your memory the fantastic stories that you saw years ago. Music brings back the good memories. Good product.

I ordered this DVD because Artur Rubenstein was one of my favorite pianists. Also, I wanted to play it for my piano class of students. It did not disappoint, it was excellent. It even included an interview, which was a nice surprise.

Personally, I am not enough of a music wizard to be able to compare this CD with others producing the same concertos. It's beautiful, I hear no flaws, it sweeps me away.

I have always regretted the way London/Decca rearranged the Haitink performances: the original pairing of this performance of the 9th was with an equally fine performance of the 1st (now paired with the intermittently interesting but ultimately unsuccessful 3rd). The performances of both symphonies on the original disc capture the mix of light and dark, playfulness and tragedy, lyricism and satire. It is unfortunate, that the current disc pairs an exemplary recording of the witty 9th with Haitink's beautifully played yet drab and soulless account of the 5th. Try to find the earlier disc.

i went searching for a Beethoven CD because i was lucky enough to find this wonderful Mozart one. But this Beethoven CD doesnt have the best performances. The most popular pieces are apparently played by beginners because the notes sound disjointed, as if they arent playing together but playing each piece separately, which is not what an orchestra is supposed to sound like....otherwise we wouldnt call it an orchestra....it would be an elementary school meddley! But anyway, the less popular pieces are boring, like the compilers didnt feel like paying for the good stuff. Overall, im disappointed with this CD. The picture is cool though.....(insert glaring smiley here).

There are very few recordings of Dinu Lipatti, due to his tragically early death. All them are in this 7 CD set (unless I have missed something), and all of them are of otherworldly beauty. In particular the Schubert impromptu no.2 in E-flat I found to be the most soulful recording of any piece I have ever heard. Needless to say I recommend this product to absolutely everyone.

A few quotations from others who can describe Lipatti much better than I:

From Yehudi Menuhin - Lipatti was a "manifestation of a spirit realm, resistant to all pain and suffering."

From Francis Poulenc - Lipatti was "an artist of divine spirituality."

From Walter Legge - "God lent the world His chosen instrument, whom we called Dinu Lipatti, for too brief a space."

An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

It's just a lovely collection of Shostakovich's Two Jazz Suites, plus his jazzy piano concerto. All sorts of music fall under the baliwick of jazz, and some of these just sound like cheap march and dance-hall music of the time and are a lot of fun, Of course, they are beautifully orchestrated by the master -- and we also get his improvisation on Tea for Two. It's all neat light listening -- a treat of sound all through. He has jitterbugged into semi-classics composing without condescension but rather with wit, bite, and glee.
