I share the very positive sentiments of the other reviewers. I have heard both of the Boulez anthologies and prefer this one, although the other is excellent too. Compared to the classic Karajan Webern single CD with the same orchestra, which I also admire, the newer Boulez performances of the same pieces are marked by equally fantastic orchestral playing, and even better recording quality, which makes the extreme dynamics of Webern's writing more effective. If there is a better Opus 1 by any composer than Webern's Passacaglia, I would like to hear it. The Schubert and especially Bach arrangements on the first CD are first class. In my view, all the performances are successful - with special kudos to the soprano Christiane Oelze and the Emerson String Quartet. The documentation, in substance ... Read More

The first thing to note about the performance of the Triple Concerto is the sonic perspective. Harnoncourt divides the violins to left and right, with cellos slightly left of center, while the sound engineering places the piano trio in among the orchestra, rather than spotlighting the soloists. This technique is unusual among recordings of this piece. I have an LP of it with the Beaux Arts Trio and Bernard Haitink in which the trio someimes drowns out the orchestra. As for the performance, Harnoncourt's work is thrilling. This is probably the best conducted performance of the piece I've ever heard. The soloists don't match the Oistrakh-Richter-Rostropovich performance, but they are certainly very good. The Choral Fantasy is given an excellent performance overall. Once again, Harnoncourt's ... I think it would not be wrong to say that most casual listeners of classical music know Beethoven mostly by his orchestral works--the symphonies, piano concertos, violin concerto, and overtures. Those who go a little deeper might know him by the piano sonatas, violin sonatas, and string quartets; however, this misses a significant portion of his oeuvre--and a major facet of his ethos and art: specifically, the chamber works and lieder: this is the "unknown" Beethoven.

This collection is absolutely the best, finest, and most excellent presentation of Beethoven's chamber works: the Horn Sonata; the Piano-Wind Quintet; the Serenade for Flute, Violin, and Viola; the Clarinet Trio; the Septet for mixed strings & winds; and the String Quintet.

Plus, some really nice esoterica: the early piano ... Read More

This splendid recording of Brahms' Violin Concerto and Double Concerto for Violin and Cello is recognized in the Grammophone Guide to Classical CDs as definitive. I doubt I have heard either concerto played with such sweetness and warmth as I have heard from Kremer and Hagen. Kremer's playing of both concerti is steeped in lyricism as well as technical brilliance. His playing of Brahms' violin concerto is as commanding a performance as Vengerov's with Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Kremer's and Hagen's performance of the Double Concerto has no peer among recent recordings. Neither outshines the other, giving compassionate, lyrical performances of equal merit. In the liner notes they mention how they treated the Double Concerto as a piece of chamber music, giving it a "light touch"; their approach to Brahms' music ... Read More

This Brahms Quintet recording ranks among the Hagens' finest. It's a shame that it is not widely available. They are able to give a transparent and thoughtful reading. All interpretive decisions are no doubt based on they careful study of the score. This is a very revealing recording, it sounds fresh compare to all the other recordings out there seem to be filled with testosterone. The Hagens have such technical facility. The pianist Gulda is a sensitive partner. The recorded sound is also excellent, slightly more reverberant compare to their other dryer sounding Beethoven Quartet recordings. Highly recommended.
