My interest in seeking Shaker music was professional - I wanted something to use for my church choir's next big performance. What I found in this collection of Shaker music was that, but much more.

Without their music, the Shakers can seem quaint and faintly silly - the odd maiden aunts and uncles with peculiar hobbies (making chairs and living without modern conveniences) and -- nutty bears, indeed! -- living in celibate, and therefore non-regenerative communities.

But their music is something else --earnest, longing, full of commitment and a sense of their own story. And tuneful! You don't have to be a Shaker to appreciate the visual poetry of "Virgins cloth'd in a clean white garment," or hear the deep commitment to resist sin in "I will fight, fight, and never ... Of this CD's twenty-eight tracks, eighteen are arrangements by Kevin Siegfried; the remaining ten are straightforward, unadorned performances of Shaker hymns, sung either by the choir in unison, or by a solo voice, as they would have been sung in Shaker services. Occasionally the choir stomps and claps, also as the Shakers would have done. The unison songs and Kevin's settings blend seamlessly together, since Kevin's music is very sensitive to the spirit of the original tunes. His harmonies have an open, rough-hewn quality to them, like early American furniture, sturdy and useful. The music carefully mirrors and supports the text, occasionally employing mixed meter to follow the natural cadences of speech. The settings are largely homophonic, like Lutheran chorales, rendering the text easily comprehensible. ... Read More

i dig this one more than BLOOD&COMMONS but hell they're both killer. Check out Rank's solo stuff as well. As to the name change? It had to do with contractual/copyright bulls***. Whatever.

Music : Blood & Commons
Once known as Snatches of Pink (whose classic records Dead Men and Bent With Prey deserve reissue), North Carolina's Clarissa combine impressionistic lyrics (songwriter Michael Rank is heavily influenced by Romantic poetry)and folky melodies with emotion-drenched vocals, loud rock guitars and powerful drumming. Blood and Commons is their most fully realized effort, with great songs like "Heavened," "Powder Blue," "In Winter" and "All But White," which are both wistful and supercharged at once. The work of Rank and friends is sadly underrated and deserves much more attention. This album is a great place to start.

If you like romantic lyrics, with a beautiful melody, sang by a beautiful voice and played by a great live band, this is a CD for you.
The first song has a very nice pop/jazz groove with a sexy and intelligent lyric and the singing is great. The second is a romantic soft ballad that could please almost all kinds of tastes. The third song is called Feminine Instict and has a very feminine lyric. And finally that forth song is fresh with a world music kind of sound mix with pop. It's very pretty. Also the booklet with the lyrics has very tasteful and beautiful pictures.
This is a great value and a wonderful product. I definatelly recommend!
