Esther is the first of Handel's oratorios by a good many years, written when he was 33 and enjoying the patronage of the Duke of Chandos. When he later became his own impresario and was running into trouble as a composer and producer of Italian operas he turned to oratorio as a strategic alternative, but at this early date his concern was to deliver staged entertainments for the Duke, and Esther, contemporary with the work that later gained the title Acis and Galatea, seems to have been just an unusually serious specimen of its type.

As often with Handel, there is no fully official version of the score, and this particular score may not even be fully complete from any point of view. The libretto seems to have been the work of someone in the frivolously named association of big literary ... Read More

Music : Shakespeare At Covent Garden / Pickett, Musicians Of The Globe
Although he's not known at all, Bishop wrote music of pure delight, perfectly matched to Shakespeare words. Joy, passion or comedy are rendered with the right tone by Philipp Picket and his musicians. The soloists and the orchestra obviously took great pleasure in performing this rare pages, as well as the listener do. The recording is perfect too. The balance between the voices and the orchestra is even. As for the style of the music itself, if you enjoyed Thomas Linley Jr.(1756-1778), you will love Bishop. A must for curious listener.

This recording of the Messiah has become my favorite. I was raised on the common full-orchestra/large chorus versions, and later in my life came to prefer the 1743 "early" versions. I find the clean orchestration much more pleasant. Up until now, I've enjoyed the Marriner production. However, I find the Hickox version to have a crisper orchestral sound. My own training and experience is as a vocalist, and the chorus in the Hickox production is sublime. Every consonant of each singer is pronounced identically and at the same time, producing a clarity rarely heard in choruses. There is space between the words, so you can actually understand them! The soloists are great - Rodgers' soprano clear but light, Landgridge's tenor very enjoyable, and Terfel great as usual. There are a number of places where ... Read More

6.The Glory of Purcell from: Polygram Records

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : The Glory of Purcell
Yes, it's a Greatest Hits Of Henry Purcell, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! A stellar selection of (partial) works by superb musicians on a packed single disc, it's a one-stop introduction to a very great composer. It's worth mentioning the remastered sound, too, because it adds to the music's vibrancy.

This album is made up of songs from the 12th through 16th centuries, mainly, plus a few composed in the same style as used back then. Some of the melodies are quite haunting and all are phenomenal. They are played using period instruments, giving the sound complete authenticity. A must for both connoisseurs and students, as well as those who simply appreciate fine music. I had the fortune of getting this CD from a friend years ago, but I would have cheerfully paid twice the list price after having listened to it.
