Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written.

In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed.

Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

I will not hesitate to say that every disc Boston Baroque puts out there, it should be in your cd library. As usual, Pearlman and his fellow musicians offer rich and exquisite performances of the orchestral Bach, just as they have done with Mozart and Handel. This first-rate disc may cost a little more than others, but it is well worth it.

As already described, the music on this CD is hillarious and the spoken sections usually less so.

This CD includes selections from many collections, but no complete collections - for example, the Dramatic Oratorio does not include the complete Oratorio, but rather a few sections. Other tracks are single movements from larger works, such as the second movement from the Grand Serenade.

I would suggest buying this CD if you do not already own any of PDQ Bach's CDs, but otherwise to buy the CDs containing complete works.

This recording is really a tremendous survey of some very powerful and beautifully performed Christmas choral literature. The pieces range from 15th century carol arrangements to modern, 20th century works from an variety of composers (many of whom have achieved some degree of notoriety in today's crowded choral music field). Representatives include Eric Whitacre, Jennifer Higdon, Ned Rorem, and Virgil Thomson to name a few. All are spectacularly performed by the clear-toned and evenly balanced Handel and Haydn Society Chorus. Notable for their emphasis on historically-informed performance practice and a rich history including the American premier in the 1800s of Handel's Messiah, the choir performs as exceptionally on works of 400 years ago as they do on those written in our century.

I disagree with the 5 star ratings given for this disc. Performances are generally rather rushed and all the overtures truncated. Playing is acceptable though I was not inspired by the flautist in Suite 2. The trouble is ultimately this disc is neither particularly exciting nor played with real feeling ( if Baroque music can be !). Perfunctory is one word which comes to mind. Chopping great lumps off the overtures might improve the balance of the suites given most other movements are short but that does not really work either.Of course that is how 4 suites get on one disc. I played Musica Antiqua Koln's versions after and these are clearly better considered and are my personal versions of choice. Vastly superior although on 2 discs.

Music : Bach: Mass in B minor
After getting my hands on Joshua Rifkin's Mass in B Minor I spent one evening comparing it with the Andrew Parrott recording I purchased earlier. I must say I do agree with what I've read about it, and to some extent Parrott's recording is "better". The conducting certainly seems more confident, more spirited at times and the balance of the solo instruments sound better. (then probably thats to the credit of the sound engineer)

However there are some bits of Rifkin's recording I prefer over Parrott's. For one thing I prefer the vocal performers of Rifkin's. Julianne Baird's singing is so lovely and sublime, her Laudamus Te totally beats Emily Van Evera's rendition. The latter seems to be consciously trying to do the vocal ornaments whereas the former just sings the music.

10.Francois Couperin: Concerts Royaux; Pieces A Deux Clavecins from: Deutsche Harmonia Mundi

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Francois Couperin: Concerts Royaux; Pieces A Deux Clavecins
Such a rich and textured collection. It goes to the heart of "soulful" Baroque. In many ways Couperin is more satisfying than Bach or Handel.
The sound is more layered and offers an "economy" of statement muscially.
This is the classical disc you will listen to over and over.
