Pavarotti is in his prime for this one and the selections are both touching and grand. Mille Cherubini, a tender lullaby, is my favorite but his Agnus Dei is rich and grand. The choral backgrounds are also very good. I bought the cassette when it came out in the 70's and I am thrilled that they reissued it as CD to grace my 2007 Christmas .

The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer speak.

I really like this CD. The music was very uplifting and soothing at the same time...I play it for my fetal son every night before bed with headphones that I stick onto my belly. I don't know if it's doing anything, but I can hear it too and it almost puts me to sleep :)

The conductor and the singers can make a beautiful song the opera that everyone jeers and hates. To have a Russian singer doing o mio babbino caro is just plain silly...give the woman a break and play something from Russian opera...give a beautiful melodic aria to a lyrical singer like Caballe...boo hiss. Try Opera's Greatest Moments where they give Hvorostvsky an aria from Pique Dame and leave the bel canto to bel canto singers.

I grew up on opera but not on Maria Callas. Joan Sutherland, Schwartzkoff, Victoria Los Angeles, and Mady Mesple (to name a few) crowded the airwaves of our home growing up. I had heard that Maria Callas was THE Diva of opera and bought one of her obscure recordings from a low budget bin while in Paris 10 years ago. It didn't impress me that much. Perhaps it was recorded during her voice decline. I could certainly tell she had a powerhouse voice but many of those arias were unknown to me and I didn't connect all that well with the CD.

After reading some of these reviews I decided to give her one more chance. Surely 50 million opera fans can't be all wrong! So I bought this disc and listened to it the other day. There are plenty of pieces to listen to and her voice is a force to be recond with. ... Read More

The selections chosen are, for the most part, to my taste, but the volume is comprised of fewer supurb selections, such as those masterpieces by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart that were found in Vol. I.

I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a steal with a list price under four dollars, and the former was a truly good compilation of many uplifting, diverse, impactful, and pleasant pieces. I am satisfied with my purchases and have filled the gap in my music collection. I can't see Opera getting better than this and the other title I mentioned. Enjoy!

... but the singer makes the music work! Composers of the 18th Century wrote many of their best opera roles for specific singers whom they knew could make those roles work. Thus we know the identities of singers long dead and obviously never recorded - Senesino, Farinelli, Carestini - and by studying the music written for them, we can get a good idea of how they sang. That's the core method of "historically informed" performance practice, the method that is fundamental to the development of countertenor technique in modern times. Development doesn't occur spontaneously; it's taken decades to achieve the artistry of countertenors today. All great singers are specially endowed by nature, but all great singers reach performance level by studied development. Philippe Jaroussky is not an exception; he's the rule. ... Read More

The Very Best of James Galway

These recordings are pure pleasure to listen to. They contain well known selections, well executed, that deliver a very nice listening experience.

I enjoy Galway's style; these two CDs offer very good value.
