The "classical" romanticist Johannes Brahms has created an astonishing and unique requiem after the death of his mother, and though it is not as dark as Mozart's or gentle as Faure's, it is still one of the finest ever created. Belgian-born conductor Philippe Herreweghe handles the tempi magnificiently (unlike John Eliot Gardiner, who sometimes takes the speed much faster than usual), and the orchestra and choir blend together to make one calling to the gracious Almighty.

Gerald Finley has a darn good baritone voice, and at the beginning of "Herr, lehre doch mich," his first words are smooth and not strident, just the way I like it.

Christian Oelze is good, too, although Brahms could have made just one more solo segment for the soprano.

I share the very positive sentiments of the other reviewers. I have heard both of the Boulez anthologies and prefer this one, although the other is excellent too. Compared to the classic Karajan Webern single CD with the same orchestra, which I also admire, the newer Boulez performances of the same pieces are marked by equally fantastic orchestral playing, and even better recording quality, which makes the extreme dynamics of Webern's writing more effective. If there is a better Opus 1 by any composer than Webern's Passacaglia, I would like to hear it. The Schubert and especially Bach arrangements on the first CD are first class. In my view, all the performances are successful - with special kudos to the soprano Christiane Oelze and the Emerson String Quartet. The documentation, in substance and presentation, ... Read More

Apart from the Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures from the sixties, these are lesser known works, and indeed several of them are early folk-song based works which does not display Ligeti's personal style at all. The highlight is undoubtedly the hugely enjoyable Nonsense Madrigals written in a "diatonic but non-tonal" style and ranging from the intensely beautiful to the hilariously funny. Nonsense vocal sounds are also the basis for the classic Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures, souvenirs from Ligeti's avant-garde experiments of the sixties and for better of worse very much of that age. The conservative early pieces are not particularly memorable. All in all, this is a collection that spans the whole of Ligeti's output and as such gives a nice overview of his stylistic evolution. Yet, I would recommend those unfamiliar ... Read More

The crowd loves Carmina Burana as much as serious musicians disdain it, and the whole point is to raise the roof. Intrinsically Orff's idiom is pop crossover from Stravinsky (primarily) with college glee club tunes. In live performance the work can be as much fun as the circus, but not here. I've rarely heard such a poker-faced reading. Thielemann usually wears an emotional mask; in this case it's imprenetrable. You can't tell which songs are erotic, joyous, parodistic, or mock reverent. Those qualities come out vividly in readings by Jochum, Fruhbeck de Burgos, and Stokowksi.

For all that, Thielemann knows how to marshal large forces, and everyone concerned does well. Nothing drags or sounds turgid in texture. Simon Keenlyside is especially smooth and sensitive in his solos (if that's what you want--parody is beyond him) ... Read More

Other reviewer makes valid comments.

The narrator is OK, but not sure if it works really well. Strange with the German translation of the Wordsworth at the beginning.

The recording quality and the orchestral playing is superb, so that is certainly a big plus of this set.

The singers are OK; nothing to get excited about. But the Pizzaro (Matthew Best) is pretty awful -- random rough sounds all over the place a lot of the time!
